From FCPS superintendent: I am writing to make you aware of the action that I am taking as a result of being notified of a serious situation at Glasgow Middle School regarding a counselor who continued to be employed despite being convicted – outside of Fairfax County – of ‘solicitation of prostitution from a minor’. I want to assure you that as soon as the School Board and I knew of the situation, we took immediate steps to dismiss the employee. I can confirm that the employee has been terminated and FCPS is petitioning the state to revoke his license.
How do things like this keep happening? |
| CONVICTED of it. Like how long ago?? |
| Didn't you see? It happened outside of Fairfax County, and they really can't be expected to track ALL the counties in VA |
| Why didn't they name this person? |
| Just did a Google search and no news stories yet. |
I don’t understand this question. In a population of that many adults, there are going to be bad apples. Is there any evidence that the ratio of problems are bigger in FCPS than other school districts or other employers? |
| Uhhh continuous background monitoring happens for substitutes in Maryland???? How is this not happening for staff in FCPS??? |
| Dr Reid having to do damage control already. Lol |
Uh they can be expected to track it? These adults work with children and most states monitor this stuff |
| There are bad apples in every organization. It’s not all that surprising of news when it happens a few times a year |
And that is unacceptable! These are our children! It's not ok that "only a few" children are put at risk of sexual abuse within their schools. It should never be expected that fcps public schools are not safe places for children. |
| What the hell? What type of background checks are they doing? |
The answer seems to be none? |
There is always a chance that an adult with no prior convictions gets a job and then abuses a kid. You cannot prevent that as hard as you try. In this case, it sounds like the Counselor had been hired and then convicted outside of FCPS and they didn't get that information somehow. The damage control on this is going to be interesting to watch because that is a serious screw up. |
| The counselor’s employment was terminated when FCPS found out about the conviction. I wouldn’t expect more than that. |
