Proposal to Stop Enforcing Speeding Tickets

Anyone see this? There’s a bill going forward for Bowser’s signature that would end the practice of requiring people to pay existing speeding tickets before re-registering their car. Apparently, it’s an economic hardship to expect people to drive the speed limit. If Bowser signs this, I guess she may as well give up on her “safe streets” initiative. I can’t believe we’re actually considering allowing dangerous drivers to just speed recklessly with zero consequences.

It is about not limiting people from the Clean Hands requirement. It is NOT about stopping to enforce speeding tickets.

What are you talking about. That IS enforcement. Go look at the Records of how much money these dangerous drivers owe the city. The only recourse is that you can’t re-register your car if it has unpaid tickets. Why would you ever pay a speeding ticket if there were no consequences?

Have fun trying to get reciprocity from Maryland and Virginia on camera tickets now. They can just say, "Why should our residents pay when *your own* residents do not."

All traffic violations are now effectively legal in DC. Drive how you want, it doesn't matter.

They were never going to get reciprocity because DCs photo enforcement practices are obviously for revenue generation and not public safety and no jurisdiction has an obligation to help the other be their tax collector.

This is great news. The state shouldn't be able to take away the ability of hard working people to get to their jobs. This is another nail in the coffin of generational poverty for BIPOC.

Obviously it is because all the speed stuff is intended to stick it to VA and MD drivers NOT actually be adhered to by DC residents. So DC can slap speed cameras at crazy low levels in tons of spots and just give an effective free pass to having its own citizens comply.

But MD and VA residents don't have to pay the tickets.

So who are they for?

a.) enforce
b.) refuse to renew registrations AND licenses
c.) get VA and MD to enforce given a huge percentage of traffic and violators aren't even from DC
