Tips to stop nighttime binging

Anonymous
I'm good all day and then I can't resist a small treat after dinner is done and the kids are in bed...and then I can't stop.

What are you best tricks for resisting the urge to eat at night? Please don't tell me "willpower," if I had enough of that I wouldn't be on this board

Change out whatever the heck it is that you're eating. I bet it's not apples or kefir you're binging on.

I either go to sleep when I feel hungry or brush my teeth. I also keep my favorites on a top shelf that I can’t reach without a stool - I’m usually too busy or lazy to get a stool and get up there.

Have you tried taking up an evening activity that occupies your hands? Knitting, crocheting, sketching, puzzles. Something satisfying and enjoyable that would also make it logistically hard to eat.

Another option could be creating a ritual that doesn't involve a sweet treat but still feels self-indulgent somehow. I weaned myself off of drinking soda during the day by getting really into tea, for instance. In the winter I also like sipping hot water with lemon and honey in it because I find it soothing and it helps me sleep.

A bath with bath salts and a good book would be indulgent without involving food at all. A big glass of ice water is refreshing in a warm bath.

Sheer willpower doesn't work, but there's lots of evidence that replacing a habit with something else that serves the same need is quite effective. You just have to figure out what it is about eating sweets at night that you enjoy, and then figure out another way to serve that need. It's unlikely to be hunger since you just ate dinner. It's something else -- comfort, ritual, relaxation, indulgence.

In case it is hunger…make sure you have enough protein and fiber in your dinner.

Also don't buy crap and bring it into the house. If it's not there, you can't eat it.

What do you mean "good all day"? Sometimes when people say that they mean "I didnt eat or ate as little as humanly possible".

I only binge when I havent eaten enough during the day like coffee and yogurt with fruit is my entire intake up until dinner and then after dinner its like GIMMEEEE. I can be not hungry all day and then eat non-stop at night. Eat more protein and fiber during the day and eat 75-80% of your needed intake during the day. Thats what stop my bingeing and I previously took medication for it, which caused me not to eat at all and then I started having vitamin and mineral deficiencies/thyroid issues. I make WAY better choices for food in the daytime versus nighttime. Nighttime is for sleeping and magnesium tea not all the salty/sweet foods that cause overeating without any nutritional value.

While you may not need crossfit-level activity calories you still need to support your daily activities.

binging or having a treat? when you say binge you mean overeating a lot and going way over your calories?

What are you eating during the day?

Overly restricting during the day, labeling foods and even yourself for what you eat as good and bad and making some food off limits tend to lead to this sort of behavior.

+1

I am a night time eater. I can eat an entire cow for dinner but still snack at night. It's just the way it is.

I have to agree with the PP. If it's not there, you can't eat it. I have proven to not have any self control so I don't buy chips, cookies or ice cream anymore.

herbal tea with a little honey. Gives me flavor with a little bit of sweet and takes a while to drink.

Ya was just going to say this. You need something that is enjoyable in it’s own way, keeps hands and mouth busy, and doesn’t lend itself to snacking. Nice herbal teas check all the boxes!

I don't buy junk food but when I'm still hungry at night, I get a bowl of Skinny Pop popcorn.

you probably don't eat enough of the right food during the day, as simple as that.
make sure that your breakfast, lunch and dinner have enough protein and fiber (vegetables), drink plenty of water, don't skip meals or replace them with snacks.
