I will just really never understand why wearing a mask is a big deal or a major inconvenience. My kids don't even remember to take them off half the time.
In fact, I mentioned to DS1 that he hopefully won't have to wear a mask next school year. He said "I don't think I would feel comfortable not wearing a mask, it is just normal now, like a shirt" I am honestly not sure he really remembers what it is like to not wear a mask in public indoor areas. Mine don't seem bothered wearing them. They have never once complained and they always remember (even when I forget lol). Honestly, we just went to Disney and wore masks from 7am to 9pm each day and it wasn't that bad at all (and we wore N95s). It didn't bother me and wasn't uncomfortable. I don't know why that means I am a liar or why it has to be shocking. Different folks obviously have different tolerance levels for things. Can we just stop being so dramatic with everything. |
I have one kid who doesn’t notice the mask at all. And another who is annoyed by it but already said she will wear it until this surge is over.

I hate mask and my kids hate mask. Can't wait for the end of this month when my kids aren't subject to such anti-science non-sense of forced masking of children.
The science is so weak on masks. The burden is on the people pushing the intervention, and masks are so lacking in evidence. The only major randomized control trial showed they don't work. If you want to follow the science, throw away your mark. |
Here is a list of
41 peer reviewed studies supporting masks 8 studies with peer review pending 5 studies that have been rejected/redacted (including the study that people refer to when they say cloth/surgical masks don't work) https://www.kxan.com/news/coronavirus/do-face-masks-work-here-are-49-scientific-studies-that-explain-why-they-do/ But please tell me how there is only one random bad study that says masks don't work. No one anywhere, says that masks are perfect. They are ONE step in preventing covid. Again, I really understand the hatred some have for them. I think it is odd to not be able to adapt to something after 2 years, but it is fine if folks find masks uncomfortable. Just there is no need to spout of claims that they are useless, when obviously they are not useless. They just aren't 100% protection. |
As if logic or facts matter to anti-maskers… |
Those are all observational studies, many with huge confounders. Many of them are on mannequins, not humans - I'm sure a mask put perfectly on a mannequin does work, but that's not how humans operate. 1 bad study?!? It actually a CONTROL GROUP and was huge - you know, control groups are what we use to compare the effect of an intervention vs. the non-effect of a placebo group. Over 300K people for months. The Bangladesh RCT is the only quality mask study done, and it showed they don't work with real life humans in a real life setting. We're following the science, you're not. |
The Bangladesh study did not show that masks don't work. It showed that surgical masks were associated with an 11% drop in risk, compared with a 5% drop for cloth. |
The surgical mask drop was only statistically significant for those over age 50! It was 18 case difference (pre-vaccine) of 100K in each arm over an 8 week period. As for cloth, that was not statistically significant - it was a difference of 2 cases of over 50,000 people in each arm! Notably, red masks worked better than other cloth masks (and better than surgical!) while purple did nothing. http://www.argmin.net/2021/11/23/mask-rct-revisited/ More importantly, we have vaccines available for those people who want their child's COVID risk below the statistically 0 mortality risk it is unvaccinated. There are masks available for protection. Vaccines and boosters are available for adults. There are treatments available too. And there are costs to masking children for 2+ years. Kids need to see faces. As the PWC lady said, this is all just political theater as Smart Restart says "to show people you care". LOL Zero COVID is impossible. You can go abuse your own child with such anti-scienceforced child masking. |
Comments like this (plus your lack of convincing evidence) are why we think you are nutters! |
There's no amount of evidence that can be shown at this point to get through your religious like beliefs in the magic cloth. It's like Mormons, Joseph Smith and his gold plats, or Scientiologists working up the Bridge to Total Freedom. At the end of the day, the burden of proof is on the person proposing the intervention, especially with young children. Meeting this burden of proof has repeatedly failed. |
Thanks for actually providing evidence. Some of the reviews indicated that the data on masking was "low certainty," which is matched by what the EU's CDC said in it's review of the data, that it was low in certainty.A few of those studies, or studies in the reviews that are actually linked, are dissected here. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/10/commentary-what-can-masks-do-part-2-what-makes-good-mask-study-and-why-most I had read through this one (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abg6296) before, about how masks work, and noted that it mentioned specifically that in virus-rich environments all masks perform worse. Isn't one of the big things with omicron that it causes more viral load and viral shedding? Wouldn't that mean that those scientists claiming the "science changed" were right because the virus changed? Any mannequin or laser studies aren't that useful because evidence shows that masks as actually worn when mandated don't reach anywhere near their peak effectiveness. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abg6296 |
Here are several studies that speak to the downsides of mask wearing:

The problem with the mask studies and the covid transmission numbers is that they are all based on adult study subjects.
We have no studies on masking in children and we don't actually track transmission among children only among adults. So apply studies and transmission date to a entire school where children are the overwhelming majority doesn't really matter. No one bothered to study or track either of these in children. Why not? Probably because the risk was so low it just wasn't worth the efforts. |
If you were not bothered or uncomfortable from wearing an N95 mask for 14 hours straight then you are definitely not wearing it correctly |
+1. We now know masks do not stop the spread and children do not die from Covid. People just don't want to admit they were wrong all along. |
