Does MCPS release the number or percent of teachers who are put on administrative leave for a report of this nature, or for sexting or grooming or whatever, and then are returned to their position, or placed in the same position in another school? That statistic would be interesting.

It was not a consensual relationship and for you to assume as such is disgusting. She was his student and his athlete, which is a relationship that can easily be manipulated when you and your family have put so much trust into someone to look after you. It’s disgusting that he took advantage of that. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been since it happened, women can come forward when they’re ready.

It is not consensual when it is your teacher, even when you are 18. The teacher is in a position of authority over the student. It is per se illegal for a teacher to sleep with a student - “consent” isn’t a defense (although I am sure Shipley’s lawyer will try fo assert that).

It is also not consensual when it is your coach. Your coach is like your boss - he is someone who holds power over your opportunities and achievements. The crew coach decides whether you will row, what position you will row, whether you are in 1st or second boat, go to special regattas, etc. All of these opportunities can make a difference in college opportunities and scholarships. Many of us have been in this position as adults - when a boss hits on us. It is impossible to deal with - we face reputational loss, career loss, loss of personal and professional relationships. It is no different with that girl and she likely felt she had even fewer protections than any one of us have in the office.

The 17 year old believed she was in a real relationship, I’m sure. It went on for several years. I still wouldn’t call that consensual when a much older guy meets you in a mandatory attendance environment and uses that to flatter and get intimate with you and leads you to believe he has your best interests at heart.

Principals need to train staff better and write them up when they breach this rule. It is not allowed in MCPS to text students. It should be documented when it happens.

Sex in the 1st degree with a student is rape no matter their age. Sex with a 17 year old is rape. Even oral or digit.
