Im at catholic and want masks. I don’t think you have your finger on the pulse like you think you do. That said, my kids are in grades 5 and higher. Maybe younger kids’ families feel differently.

My kids are the same age as yours, and I am in favor of mask optional. Optional is a great approach because it allows each parent to do what's best for their child, In the end, masking will have very little effect on spread in schools because 1) there are so many mitigations in place at schools 2) as shown last year there is very little spread in schools 2) Masks are simply not proven to prevent virus from escaping or being inhaled its just the only thing we have for the unvaccinated that make us feel any kind of hope.

Masks can have other effects on children especially given that we are going into the 2nd full year of possible wearing them. This is not a short term solution at this point.

Everyone needs to weigh their Child's risk

Mask optional is a thoughtful approach for all.

Masks are really the only mitigation schools are doing at this point other than maybe keeping windows open. Enforcing distancing is impossible. The best for your own kid argument only works when it's something that can't effect others. If I decide that it's best for my kid to not treat them for lice and send them to school, but it's okay because it's what's best for my kid and your can always wear a cap to protect their hair. Totally absurd, right? So is your argument.

I have been waiting for someone to bring up the LICE thing. It is such a great parallel.

Good work, PP.

When the kid who does not want to wear a mask (parent-permitting) tests positive and the class has to quarantine, and they all go virtual for 2 weeks, they should have to reimburse the masked families for tuition. Maybe 20 times $500 or whatever will make an impact.

My kid had to quarantine about 5 times last year (pre-Vax) and once again, post vax (not everyone was vaccinated, obviously). It was hard to keep paying for school but we stuck it out as everyone did.

At this point, people who want to say parents choose what is right for their child, they can foot the bill. You break it, you bought it.

You nailed it. I never thought about it the way you describe but you've completely nailed it.

There was very little spread in schools last year, because students were WEARING MASKS!

What "other effects" on children occur due to mask wearing? Source please on this claim?

Provide evidence to your own statement. It's only your opinion, and that of many others that desperately want their kids in school 5 days a weeks at all costs, that masks prevented the spread. There were too many other variables in place last year to scientifically conclude that masks had any impact on spread.

I'm glad masks did not impact your child. All children are still welcome to wear them if it makes them feel safe.

But others, especially the vaccinated, should not be forced to wear masks to make others feel safe. There are other things they can do to prevent spread and still get the most out of school. They can wash their hands, and not come to school when they are feeling sick.

Laughable. There is A LOT of evidence that masking has a positive net effect.

Questions on your points 1 and 2 above.

1) beyond masks which mitigations is your school carrying forward this year beyond masks ?

2) masks DO indeed offer protection if worn properly and consistently. What’s the source of your data to the contrary?

Lol. Masks optional (aka each man for himself!) is the least thoughtful approach I can imagine!

Same for St. Luke in McLean. We are thrilled for our kids (including 1 vaccinated).

You do realize that your vaccinated child can still carry and transmit the virus to an unvaccinated child, right? And unless you child is in a HS-only school, there will be an unvaxed population there. And that even in a HS full of vaxed students, they and the teachers will have younger kids at home to whom they can transmit virus. You do know all this, right? I get that people want a return to pre-pandemic education and are enamored with “parent choice”, but we have to have leadership to require us to do that which we don’t want to do.

Do you get that the chance of a vaccinated person catching it is very very small. And, if they don't catch it they can't spread it.

There are much bigger risks in life to the unvaccinated than catching covid from a vaccinated person in another room.

Not thrilled as in excited about the circumstances. But thrilled that our administration continues to make smart decisions with the good of all students in mind, yes.

Nope. New data was released by the CDC last week showing that vaccinated people infected with the delta variant carry viral loads similar to those of people who are unvaccinated.

You are missing the point. Most vaccinated people will not become infected.

Yes, “we” do.

Did your school survey parents about their mask preference? If so, do you know the result? If not, you are simply speaking to your preference and experience.

Let’s let the Department of Health and the CDC, the experts, make these decisions.
