Im at catholic and want masks. I don’t think you have your finger on the pulse like you think you do. That said, my kids are in grades 5 and higher. Maybe younger kids’ families feel differently.

My kids are the same age as yours, and I am in favor of mask optional. Optional is a great approach because it allows each parent to do what's best for their child, In the end, masking will have very little effect on spread in schools because 1) there are so many mitigations in place at schools 2) as shown last year there is very little spread in schools 2) Masks are simply not proven to prevent virus from escaping or being inhaled its just the only thing we have for the unvaccinated that make us feel any kind of hope.

Masks can have other effects on children especially given that we are going into the 2nd full year of possible wearing them. This is not a short term solution at this point.

Everyone needs to weigh their Child's risk

Mask optional is a thoughtful approach for all.

Masks are really the only mitigation schools are doing at this point other than maybe keeping windows open. Enforcing distancing is impossible. The best for your own kid argument only works when it's something that can't effect others. If I decide that it's best for my kid to not treat them for lice and send them to school, but it's okay because it's what's best for my kid and your can always wear a cap to protect their hair. Totally absurd, right? So is your argument.

I have been waiting for someone to bring up the LICE thing. It is such a great parallel.

Good work, PP.

When the kid who does not want to wear a mask (parent-permitting) tests positive and the class has to quarantine, and they all go virtual for 2 weeks, they should have to reimburse the masked families for tuition. Maybe 20 times $500 or whatever will make an impact.

My kid had to quarantine about 5 times last year (pre-Vax) and once again, post vax (not everyone was vaccinated, obviously). It was hard to keep paying for school but we stuck it out as everyone did.

At this point, people who want to say parents choose what is right for their child, they can foot the bill. You break it, you bought it.

Lady, sign up for st isadore virtual. It’s a pandemic with most children unvaccinated. Masks will be required. Shame on you. What would Jesus do? Shame.

You are laughable. I’ll pray for you.

Thought it might be helpful to update: Holy Spirit just released that they will require masks indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccine status. No masks will be required for outdoor activities.

Im not anti-mask, but there’s been a huge push in recent years to not send children home because of lice, arguing that the disruption to education outweighs the health concerns and many area schools no longer do so, so not sure your argument is as compelling as you think.

Our school just announced they “encourage mask wearing”. Not sure how that will work out.

PP, I'm sorry. I would be pretty unhappy with that approach.

Catholic schools masks of course no masks it's not like the Church cares about child abuse at all. History is a clear guide here.

Let them not wear masks. that's on their parents. I don't care any more. Callous yes, then again these sub-humans don't care about anyone else at all.

There was very little spread in schools last year, because students were WEARING MASKS!

What "other effects" on children occur due to mask wearing? Source please on this claim?

Our K-8 announced masks for all - vaccinated or not -- which, as the Pope said, is the ethical thing to do! We are all in this together, and the bottom line is our students will be attending school in-person again this year.

I just pray that parents who may have strong feelings one way or another have the grace and tact to talk about this situation away from their children, and be supportive when speaking to their children about the school's decision.

That’s great news that your school is giving parents a choice.

Provide evidence to your own statement. It's only your opinion, and that of many others that desperately want their kids in school 5 days a weeks at all costs, that masks prevented the spread. There were too many other variables in place last year to scientifically conclude that masks had any impact on spread.

I'm glad masks did not impact your child. All children are still welcome to wear them if it makes them feel safe.

But others, especially the vaccinated, should not be forced to wear masks to make others feel safe. There are other things they can do to prevent spread and still get the most out of school. They can wash their hands, and not come to school when they are feeling sick.

Yes, I was very happy and relieved to read that email. Our family has a mix of vaccinated and not yet eligible and everyone is on board with it (one even said "yay!" but they're my extreme introvert lol).

Not opinion. Evidence based on research. Not emotion.

Masking is part of a mitigation strategy that includes hand washing and staying home when sick…they all work together to be effective.
