No, “we” do not.

Yes, “we” do.

No, we don’t.

WWJD?

He’d mask up.

Love thy neighbor, remember?

Im at catholic and want masks. I don’t think you have your finger on the pulse like you think you do. That said, my kids are in grades 5 and higher. Maybe younger kids’ families feel differently.

My kids are the same age as yours, and I am in favor of mask optional. Optional is a great approach because it allows each parent to do what's best for their child, In the end, masking will have very little effect on spread in schools because 1) there are so many mitigations in place at schools 2) as shown last year there is very little spread in schools 2) Masks are simply not proven to prevent virus from escaping or being inhaled its just the only thing we have for the unvaccinated that make us feel any kind of hope.

Masks can have other effects on children especially given that we are going into the 2nd full year of possible wearing them. This is not a short term solution at this point.

Everyone needs to weigh their Child's risk

Mask optional is a thoughtful approach for all.

There was very little spread in schools last year, because students were WEARING MASKS!

What "other effects" on children occur due to mask wearing? Source please on this claim?

Provide evidence to your own statement. It's only your opinion, and that of many others that desperately want their kids in school 5 days a weeks at all costs, that masks prevented the spread. There were too many other variables in place last year to scientifically conclude that masks had any impact on spread.

I'm glad masks did not impact your child. All children are still welcome to wear them if it makes them feel safe.

But others, especially the vaccinated, should not be forced to wear masks to make others feel safe.
There are other things they can do to prevent spread and still get the most out of school. They can wash their hands, and not come to school when they are feeling sick.

You do realize that your vaccinated child can still carry and transmit the virus to an unvaccinated child, right? And unless you child is in a HS-only school, there will be an unvaxed population there. And that even in a HS full of vaxed students, they and the teachers will have younger kids at home to whom they can transmit virus. You do know all this, right? I get that people want a return to pre-pandemic education and are enamored with “parent choice”, but we have to have leadership to require us to do that which we don’t want to do. [/quot
e]

Do you get that the chance of a vaccinated person catching it is very very small. And, if they don't catch it they can't spread it.

There are much bigger risks in life to the unvaccinated than catching covid from a vaccinated person in another room.

Nope. New data was released by the CDC last week showing that vaccinated people infected with the delta variant carry viral loads similar to those of people who are unvaccinated.

You are missing the point. Most vaccinated people will not become infected.

I’m not. My point is that the vaccinated should wear masks to protect the unvaccinated. I am aware that symptomatic breakthrough cases are relatively rare (so far). But what is clear is that a vaccinated person can still nonetheless carry and transmit the virus and in an unvaccinated population like a lower school, the right thing to do is require masks for everyone, at least until Delta shows sign of slowing (it’s still rising). I don’t know how to explain myself any more clearly. I can explain it to you, but I cannot understand it for you.

I don’t want my kids to wear a mask, I wish they didn’t have to. But the world is the way it is, not the way I wish it were.

Did your school survey parents about their mask preference? If so, do you know the result? If not, you are simply speaking to your preference and experience.

Let’s let the Department of Health and the CDC, the experts, make these decisions.

Ours did and thank goodness the ant-mask parents were FAR and away the minority.

Nobody likes the idea that our kids will have another abnormal year. But the situation is still active and perhaps even increasing in complexity for those kids who are not yet eligible for vaccines. Especially in k-8s, there is no choice but to offer protection all the way through the youngest students. Full stop.

As others have pointed out, I have no doubt that this is what Jesus also would have done. If you are only focused on the impact of masks singularly on your own kid, I would reflect on whether being part of a Catholic school is really a good fit for your family.

Let’s not drag Jesus into this.

You all realize that masks are just literally masking the problem? So much energy fighting on the virtues of masks and no pressure on FDA for full approval for vaccines. Or vaccination mandates. One of those teacher union reps was on NPR today slipping and sliding in whether vaccines should be mandated. She was all about masks. Guess what? We did masks - they did not stop the spread or prevent illness like vaccines do.

Make vaccines mandatory for teachers. Make the mandatory for 12 and up if you want to go to school in person. And then ASAP - Hope end of month - when Pfizer gets full approval - make them mandatory in every workplace.

Agree: let’s get everyone who is eligible vaxxed ASAP. Get full approval for the vaxx ASAP. Make it mandatory in the workplace and for eligible children ASAP. Get it approved for kids under 12 ASAP.

In the meantime, mask up to protect the unvaxxed and minimize exposure and spread.

We can do both - at the same time!

And BTW, if your kid is in an ADW or any Catholic school, you have chosen to drag Jesus into your school experience. You know he’d mask up.

Again with Jesus. BTW - most folks find it nauseating when Catholics pull out Jesus to defend arguments that have no religious merit.

For Catholic to mention Jesus? If it nauseates you, maybe the Diocese should not be your 1st stop.

BTW, if Jesus takes of his mask, do you think his face is left on the fabric, or only if the mask is made by someone named Veronica?

Perhaps Jesus would have told the unvaccinated to stay home until they were vaccinated. That would be far better protected.

Feel like thinking about Jesus is literally the point of Catholic schools but you do you!

So your view is that only middle schools and high schools should be open for in-person instruction? That's wild and not supported by <checks notes> any science.

Mitigations last year (including masks!) kept kids of all ages in school.

No that's not my view. That's PP's view. PP insists that everyone must sacrifice for others if they consider themselves a Jesus following Catholic. I'm just saying if you think everyone should sacrifice and wear masks and that is the only approach a Catholic should take. I think you should look in the mirror. Are people being selfish by insisting their child must attend. A mask is no where near as effective as a vaccine. I'm sorry if not everyones is eligible. But, perhaps Jesus would consider staying home the appropriate and ultimate sacrifice.

Also, many schools in the diocese only offered hybrid to kids last year. And it was the older grades that were forced to stay home. These schools were relying on distancing and masks last year to prevent spread. Masks were not magical alone. It was the spacing.
