My kid was called a “fear monster” for wearing a mask at school today. I assume she was called a ‘fear monger’, but the message is clear. As if our country wasn’t divided already, now our school that I have always found as a haven, certainly is.

+1. We were considering our parish school for our rising kinder, but this whole discussion has be thinking differently. The hatefulness of the posters are frightening.

I think that there are a lot of trolls on this thread. Our school has handled this beautifully. I think each school does have its own culture so talking to parents is important. So where are Catholic school is very diverse because we don't draw from wealthier areas, we are small - other schools are very affluent and have different demographics. In our school 98% of the kids opted to remained masked. No one is being mean to the kids unmasked. Families are tight within the grades and friends.

I’m very sorry, op. Our principal’s letter specifically expressed concern about this sort of thing, and asked parents to remind kids about being respectful towards others. I had that talk with my kids. I’m sorry it hasn’t been true for everyone.

It would help your position if you would speak more respectfully. It’s disingenuous to say Covid is “barely more than the flu”. I went to a funeral for the mother of a young child in our school community just a few weeks ago. There are arguments to be made about the costs vs benefits of masking. I’d prefer to hear the rational ones.

At best, the masks are only catching some sneezes and spittle.

Our son's pediatrician wrote an order for antibody test so hopefully that test will prevent him from having to quarantine if he eventually opts to go maskless. The school's stricter mandatory quarantine policies are the prime reason for many parents not signing the mask waiver.

School employee here… we just had a lovely set of four siblings sent home to quarantine. All were maskless this week. Another set of two siblings also under quarantine. Yep, no mask as well. Masked kids have not had to quarantine by the end of the week. Just anecdotal information.

Did you attend Mass? He may have contracted it there?

FWIW, many of you are claiming children are not wearing masks properly and that is not something I am seeing in our school. Please stop projecting. The Diocese gave you a choice for your students: wear a mask or don’t wear a mask. Name calling and chiding those who mask their children is not okay (looking at you tin foil hat, rag, diaper, Etsy, bad mom posters). Model Christian behavior and name calling is not one. Your children are watching and listening.

Good luck with that. CDC and health department guidelines say vaccinated or infection within 90 days does not have to quarantine. Whether or not your, presumably unvaccinated child has antibodies isn't going to persuade the school to not follow the protocol. If vaccinated or you have a dated test with positive result within 90 days, then you should be good, maskless or not. Where masks come into play with quarantine is distance. For schools, unvaccinated kids who are more than 3ft apart if both are masked correctly do not need to quarantine. That distance becomes more than 6 ft if either child is not wearing a mask.

Citizen who pays attention here. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) has stated that essentially “everybody” will get COVID.

Yes - I guess parents get a bit prickly when other adults try to force their children to do something that they have decided is not in the best interest of their children. After a year and a half of this pointless masking, our patience is wearing thin.

You are saying quarantine not isolated - so that means they were quarantined because another kids came to school with COVID?

So that means the "massless" kids did nothing wrong. They came to school. Now they are being asked to stay home. It's their choice. They know the risk. They have not spread COVID. It's the other child that came to school sick that may have spread it.

Were they vaccinated? I'm assuming you don't know since schools should not be sharing that information.

The reality is that they are probably being asked to stay home because they are not vaccinated. It has nothing to do with the mask.

If they are vaccinated, your school should be reported for only quarantining vaccinated maskless students. That's not how the guidelines work.
