Daughter got into her reach school, but wants to go to the safety.

If someone says that wouldn't feel the same way as you, OP, they are lying. Of course you want her to go to her reach!

Where you go to college matters. A lot. Especially for upwardly mobile middle class people (especially immigrants). If you're rich and white and connected though, not so much.

Meh. I work with a bunch of people who all do the same job. Some of us went to Harvard, Brown, Cornell, Northwestern, and Wesleyan. Some of us went to UVA, Va Tech, UMD, BU. Some of us went to Wooster, UNC-Asheville, George Mason, Indiana Wesleyan, Trinity (TX), and Elon. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No one appears to be from wealth.

And I'm willing to bet the latter group is whiter and wealthier than the former group.

I don't think that's the case, actually.

I'm actually not keen on my DC attending their reach. I think one of the lower ranked schools on the table would be a better fit, for a number of reasons. (And I'm ~25 spots down in the rankings, not just a place or two.)

It is so obnoxious to assume that you can speak for everyone else. So, if they say they have a different view than you, they MUST be lying? Really?
Is it arrogance or ignorance that makes you walk around the world that way?

I was not sure which school would be best for my child to attend. The concerns I had about her safeties were different than those I had about her reaches, but it was by no means obvious where SHE would have the best experience. If you think it can all be reduced to USNWR rankings, you are hopelessly superficial and simplistic.

It’s a reasonable conclusion. That chance that fit and rank would order identically is absurd. Sounds like they chose the wrong reach though. The hope is that it’s a difficult admit but a great fit.

OP the only thing that matters is her major and the coursework.

Have her compare the schools which one is better for what she wants to do.

College the goal is getting out and getting a good paying job.

Safety is a better fit for major then it's 100% a better fit for her.

Sorry this is a long thread and I don’t have the time to read the entire thing. Did the OP mention which two schools or even the difference in ranking?

I personally think there are plenty of colleges in the top 75 that offer students a great education and the ultimate decision should be based on multiple factors including fit and finances.
