+1000! Did SNL realize such a fantastic discussion would ensue based on their hilarious video?

Boomers, take a look at this article and see if you disagree.

My 55 year old Dad is a selfish pr*ck. I’ll show it to him.

My in-laws are Boomers. “What have you done for me lately?” is their motto. Yet missed every single one of my child’s birthdays, sacraments, graduations, you name it. (Been retired for years. Well before we were married) Every time they have words with my DH, they exclaim “ you are out of my will!”. Keep it. We’d rather you show up once in a while.

I'm a boomer. I hate SNL because it is no longer funny, not like it used to be when I was young, this skit included, although I love Kate McKinnon in anything.

I'm kind of disappointed in you people. I actually thought younger generations were less judgmental and less inclined to stereotype people. Guess not.

I completely disagree. Weekend Update makes me laugh out loud. The writing is creative and funny.

Don't be so sore just because they made fun of Boomers for once. Do you still have any sense of self-humor?

Question from an elder millennial/Xennial: Boomers, why do you take these jokes and stereotypes so personally? If they don't apply to you, why do you have to point it out? Why does it matter so much that younger generations are having a bit of fun? There are plenty of millennial stereotypes that don't fit me, but it doesn't send me into a fit of rage to hear or see them.

OMG, these are my ILs, with the houses, noses out, and selfishness. My parents are the silent generation and very different.

YES. They said they will visit the kids after the vaccines. They are in vacation now, no visit. My 4 y/o doesn't know their names, it's this bad. MIL has a facelift coming up now - it was postponed by covid, so maybe by 2024 we'll see them.

Anonymous wrote:“Age-based prejudice is the last acceptable form of prejudice,” says New York University’s Michael North, who studies ageism in the workplace. “People are making age-based generalizations and stereotypes that you wouldn’t be able to get away with about race or background. Insert some sort of racial or ethnic group, or ‘OK Woman,’ and it wouldn’t go over too well.”

Michael North share the common academic affliction that if he's not studying it, it's not there.

And anytime someone refers to anything as the "last acceptable prejudice," you know you're looking at someone who is fine with their own various forms of privilege and fuming about the ones they don't have.

DP here. Maybe it's not the "last" acceptable prejudice (FTR there are some others out there like classism), but it's certainly considered acceptable. And seriously, pp, you are fine with this? It sounds like you're the one who is fine with your own form of privilege. Folks, it's wrong to stereotype people based on their age (whether young or old) just as it's wrong to do it based on race, class, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. I will continue to defend young people against attacks from other people who make sweeping generalizations about them. Will you do the same for older people as well as young people? Or is that ruining your fun?

I'm a boomer (just barely), so make of it what you will. I'm also straight, white, female, financially secure, abled (physically, mentally, & psychologically), fat, cisgender, Protestant -- and if you're making fun of one of the ways I'm privileged, I'll laugh if it's funny. Punch up, FFS.

Sorry your parents hated you so much that you blast the entire generation. Time for a timeout.

Am I supposed to pretend all generations are the same? Sorry but no.

Overall, boomers are pretty selfish and have consumed way more than their fair share of our resources. But I’m glad that the boomers in your life aren’t like that. Hopefully you are grateful.

Any evidence at all for this assertion? I mean, aside from your self-absorption?

NP here, are you serious? There are countless studies on generational characteristics, people make a tidy living giving corporate presentations on this type of stuff. I just sat through one for course credits and he specifically characterized Boomers as spending everything they've got before they die and "sliding in [to the grave] with the wheels on fire." I don't want or need an inheritance, but spending it all and leaving nothing behind is a legitimate characteristic of that generation. As are selfishness, failure to protect the environment, and general sense that public goods (land, public services, etc) are to be used up by them without thought to leaving anything for other people.

The training I sat through had an interesting bit about the rewards each generation finds most motivating. The generation before Boomers valued security over all, the Boomers value status, older Gen X value knowledge, younger Gen X and older Gen Y value inclusion, and younger Gen Y value freedom.

That is interesting. I think I mostly buy it; seems pretty accurate.

What does valuing inclusion mean?

Your 55 year old Dad is not a boomer, but if he is a pr*ck he probably hates on them just like you.

Yes, young boomers used to say that as they rebelled against the establishment that was controlled by the olds. Sounds like the same idea as hating on Boomers no? Same ole thing, different generation.

Boomers did not invent the internet. They were just coming out of college when it started.

Wrong. Steve Jobs, Tim Berners Lee, Bill Gates all born in 1955. All boomers.

WWE is not the internet.

WWW.

I’m sure a boomer invented autocorrect though.

Boomers invented spell check for you kiddies.

Also, Bill Gates didn’t invent the PC. And what does Steve Jobs have to do with this?

Gates invented Windows which made PC's user friendly with a graphic interface. Prior to that you would have to interact in DOS on a PC. Also, Gates invented desktop applications which were standardized and user friendly. So yes, Gates invented the PC as you know it.

Google Steve Jobs if you've never heard of him or Apple/Mac.

Please quote me a comment here where someone's having a "fit of rage". I'll wait. Most boomers I know are way funnier than you people. And BTW, that's not rage, that's just an observation.
