DP. I don't believe it. Being truly anti-racist requires honesty. You did not exist outside of culture.

Yeah, everyone who didn't act like you is a liar.

Nah - just not self aware.

I guess you feel better about bigotry if you convince yourself it was the norm. The only delusional person here is the one who thinks "everyone" acted like that.

DP. You are the most dangerous because you maintain your ignorance. I do not believe there is a single adult today who grew up in the US who did not say, participate in, watch, read, or otherwise contribute to a culture of white supremacy, systemic misogyny, racism, ableism, or homophobia. It permeated (and still permeates) the culture. You are excusing yourself because you didn't say exactly what OP did. But at least OP is being honest with himself while you aren't.
'

Bold of you to say that POC contribute to white supremacy. Really, you guys are reaching far to make yourselves feel better.

You think POC cannot perpetuate white supremacy? lulz

If you actually took the time to learn about white supremacy, particularly in the America, you would you realize how ignorant your comment is.

OR. I said OR. God, you can't even read. No wonder you think you are perfect.

Where did I say I was perfect? No need to call me God.

It's amazing how angry you're getting because I simply pointed out that not everyone behaved like you.

They can, but saying that a POC lacks self awareness because they pointed out that not everyone behaved the same in the early 00s is quite a reach.

You're right, so there is no point in trying to improve so i won't. You win.

You called yourself perfect by saying you didn't act like OP. And while you may not have done exactly what OP did, I am 100% certain you were an active participant in a culture of bigotry, racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, or ableism. You behaved like OP at some point, you just can't admit it for ego reasons.

I never said anything like OP either that I remember, because what OP described was not okay in my family. But unlike you, I know I must have said something hurtful to someone, or benefitted somehow by the power structures in place, because that was what existed at the time and I was part of US culture at the time. You are being blind in your insistence that you aren't like OP and putting your own ego ahead honesty.

If you can look back and identify things you've done and said that were biased, discriminatory or promoted stereotypes and understand why it was wrong then that is a good thing. I'd even ask people to go deeper and research things like blackface and other racist ideology/stereotypes and how and why it keeps getting perpetuated.

And for goodness sakes you don't need to shout from the rooftops of how woke you are now - just learn and unlearn, listen to POC, listen to understand, and pass on what you learn to your kids.

That's literally all you have to do.

Signed - 53 yo Black woman

I am one of the people of color who posted above and agree; it’s not that complicated.

Most of the handwringing on this thread is advanced by conservatives who are aiming to make “wokeness” into a bad word and “cancel culture” into the bogeyman responsible for all society’s ills.

For that they will claim that children are being penalized for their actions as middle schoolers, BIPOC are equally responsible for their own oppression, and since no one is perfect, nothing can ever be improved unless we all just quit whining about rights and oppression.

It’s like MAGA bingo in here. Next up someone will bring up rap music, black on black crime, and how all minorities hate each other. The same damn tires arguments again and again.

It's not just conservatives decrying the cancel culture & wokeness. It's liberals, too. May of the PPs above have said that they are liberals. We are sick and tired of it. And people are being penalized for actions as MS, HS, etc. But even if the action was as an adult, is reformation not possible? The current climate seems to be aimed at internet warfare instead of creating actual cultural change.

+1
And I say this as a non-White immigrant that came from a colonized country.

We need to know the history, we need to understand the lense we view the world from and we need to make today better.

I feel many people do not recognize when they are being culturally racist but change when you remind them. The Karen's are usually just plain old horrible human beings and bullies.

If you’re a liberal decrying cancel culture, then you’ve been drawn hook line and sinker into the MAGA argument that it is more about internet warfare than shining a light on racist, sexist, homophobic behavior.

Cancel culture is a straw man and a myth.

In the year of our lord 2021, if you say something racist, then you probably will be called out for it. In the year 2000 if you said the same thing, you wouldn’t be. That’s just called progress.

People who hate being called out on their shitty behavior are crying about cancel culture rather than actually changing

So, if I said something in the year 2000 that is now deemed to be racist, sexist, ____ist, do I lose my job?

I've definitely been to Halloween parties in 2001 when high school football players dressed up as "Arab terrorists"

So the girl who's college acceptance was rescinded because of something she said as a high school freshman - is that a myth? Didn’t happen? Not actually cancel culture? Please explain.

OP: Gee I really said a lot of stuff I didn’t realize was racist back in the day.

Posters: Well now that you know better, you should do better

Other posters: OMG! You’re not the problem! The problem is CANCEL CULTURE! It’s ruining the future of our middle schoolers! Also people of color should be canceled, they’re racist too!

I never said them, but it was very common language amongst other black people at times. It always made me uncomfortable.

To the PP mentioning Big Bird. Sesame Street was introducing the concept of diversity. It took 30+ years to get from there to today. It was a long and painful road. Thank goodness for PBS looking out for the latchkey kids that had to be home to answer the phone when mom called!

Random note.
I liked Mitch McConnell when he first ran as a Republican, until he suggested cutting out PBS funding. My heart dropped and rage ensued. (Satire/casm)

I wont post the terms but they were derogatory towards any race that wasn't black. Not everyone. Eventually I gained a voice and shared that it made me uncomfortable and it was wrong, and it wasn't funny, to stop. It settled down, and then it stopped, eventually.

Change is hard for some things, and sometimes it is nearly impossible for imperfect humans.

Exactly. When you align this reasoning with studies that show white ppl believe they are subject to racism more than any other group, we can start to establish a clear view of the real issue at hand.
