I'm so frustrated by all the messaging that kids should enjoy this day with their families and that kids and teachers deserve a day off. It is extremely tone-deaf for working families where the parents do not get a day off.

(Not to mention the day off this Monday for President's day, or the day and a half off kids have next week due to conferences). I can't exactly tell my employer I need the day off today. (And I can't find a kids camp, or group playdate as I would do in normal circumstances). Instead, yet another day of too much junk-food screen time for my kids, which is the last thing they need at this point in the pandemic.

Amen. Once again, everyone else's interests come at the expense of working women, who are expected to smile while eating shit with a spoon because that's what good women do.

YUP - teachers complained they didn't have childcare today so APS closed.. So many working mothers/families have been battling this for almost a year. The bias is unbelievable and I don't understand how APS gets away with this. Curious of what's happening with that lawsuit - anyone have any insight?

This is a lie.
They closed because the feds closed out of worry about ice storms and a lack of power.
Next time, if you don't know the facts, shut up.

Sooo - APS closed because we "might" lose power while everyone is learning and teaching remotely? This still doesn't make sense.

They don’t need to explain. They didn’t need to explain when they were going in person either. Get a damn grip.

If it had been really bad, and your kids lost power and Internet and missed their classes, you’d probably be pissed off then, too. Right?

At least it's the truth, which makes it better than the BS that PP is spreading.

Seems like APS will do anything to keep kids from learning these days

maybe have some empathy for working parents that have been dealing with this BS for almost a year.

I am a federal employee. The OPM excuse is BS. It clearly says: FEDERAL OFFICES in the Washington, DC area are CLOSED. Emergency employees and telework employees continue to work.

All people who can telework should continue to work. Will we start canceling school if there is a threat of thunderstorms? There is no excuse that remote learning cannot continue.

Most teachers I know are working moms.

Interesting are they most ES teachers? DD 10 has 2 teachers both unmarried. DD 12 has 7 teachers and only one is a working mom. Others are empty nesters, men (both married with kids) or single women. Interesting to think about.

At our ES there is not a lot of working moms. However, if you look around the Arlington community, tons of working moms & dads, double-income is necessary given the cost of housing (that was supposed to be worth it due to the high-quality education, gasp).. this is in-part why everyone is fuming at another unnecessary day off of school.

You know what? I am a working teacher mom, paying the mortgage in Arlington, too. In defense of single teachers- I have to tell you, I may be more experienced than I was when I started, but I never put so many hours in as I did when I was younger. The teachers in Arlington are very good. I think your anger at teachers because of a) a global pandemic and b) a snow day call you don’t like is very misguided. It honestly seems that you’re upset that there are single teachers at home right now that don’t have kids to take care of. They’re probably spending a good part of this day grading and planning, trust me.

I’m saving my ire for the decision that kids need to be masked and 10 feet apart at recess. Has anyone told them how great the ventilation is in the great outdoors!!!!

Working teacher mom here- I agree with you. I do. Hoping the plan may loosen up as time goes on and things get better. Ten feet outside seems a little Draconian.

+10000 I am a teacher and I have met with 3 other teachers, completed 2 IEP drafts, created materials and lesson planned. It is 1:26 and I am just now sitting down to enjoy the day off. I am not at all complaining because I am beyond thankful for this day to get a little bit caught up. My own kids have been in front of the TV all day. This is just part of the job.

Keeping kids 10 feet apart, with masks on, during recess after keeping them away from their friends for almost a year will certainly help address the mental health concern the kids are facing..SMH.

It doesn’t even make sense. They’ll be closer together in the building.

I am not even worrying about this. Our recess is monitored by recess monitors which are barely out of school themselves. They are often on their phone and basically just make sure no one dies. I am NOT upset about this. I think its fine. But I don't think they are going to be able to keep kids apart nor do I think they will try.
