APS Distance learning cancelled due to weather

The explanation is it’s weather. Nobody told you you had to bicker.

With no snow. Ice, sleet yes, but no snow. Fun times to play outside.

Ice is WORSE . It’s way more dangerous for school employees to go in on ice.

Way more dangerous to get to your computer?? I get closing buildings. That makes sense. DL? Too icy between your kitchen and office???

Do you understand that if schools are considered open for the day, nutrition staff HAS to report. Why? Because meals HAVE to be provided on a sxhool day. Custodians HAVE to report. Admin HAS to report. Any federally mandated schedules tests like ACCESS/WIDA HAVE to happen? No of course you don’t because the world revolves around you and hating teachers.

The buildings were already closed for the day, so no those people weren't reporting. I really DGAF but canceling DL is beyond ridiculous.

My kid is a senior and we're beyond done with APS but I feel for the people who have to work and have little kids.

As I stated. Closing buildings doesn’t mean it’s not a school day. This is the time of year federally mandated WIDA testing is taking place. You cannot do it online. If it’s a school day, those tests have to happen. If it’s a school day MEALS HAVE to be provided . You can’t just close buildings and still have a school day because there are certain things tied to having a school day that don’t go away if buildings are closed.

DP. Last night's announcement said all buildings and offices were closed for today, all in-person services were cancelled, and only essential personnel to report unless instructed otherwise by supervisor.

This morning's announcement was that all distance learning is cancelled for today, all buildings and offices were closed for today, all in-person services were cancelled, and only essential personnel to report unless instructed otherwise by supervisor. Literally the only difference between the two announcements was that distance learning is cancelled. Meal service and stuff was already cancelled as of last night. So your explanation doesn't make sense.

The change would make sense if they had some kind of weather related utility issue that took down some portion of the APS technology infrastructure so they can't do distance learning today.

Okay so a better explanation?

Obviously people are curious why distance learning is being for weather. Several weeks back they closed buildings for weather but didn’t cancel classes. Why is this different?

^ why do they need to explain beyond what’s on their winter weather page? Not trying to be snarky...but it says that they make the decision with student, staff, and visitor safety as the driving factor.

They don’t. It’s ice. Bad enough dominion warned us we might lose power. But sure hold distance learning when people might lose power and not be able to attend class. I swear people will do anything to complain.

Like everything else throughout this pandemic, there is no reason there couldn't be alternatives here. Keeping kids from learning from home and teachers teaching from home should be the very last thing to close.. once again, our kids' education comes in last.

because APS is the biggest follower. All we ever have to do is watch FCPS and we will know our outcome. Sad and pathetic.

Exactly - It infuriates me that there is no explanation provided. Who holds Duran accountable here? The kids have 1/2 day next Thursday (literally about an hour of school), and no school on Friday. The reduced instruction this year is insane. Why does Duran not care about our children learning??? How long are we going to suffer through his leadership?

FFS, parenting, especially younger kids, is tough. Things will come up as a result of having them that will mildly inconvenience you and/or majorly suck. It could be they’re sick on a day of an important meeting of their school closes (for reasons you may or may not agree with), or there’s a global pandemic. If you didn’t want your schedule interrupted, or have difficulty coping when life happens to wreak havoc on that schedule, then you shouldn’t have had kids.

PP: not directed at you so much as all these whiny parents who complain about everything!

LOL @ the different tones in the threads about the closure decision. One thread = enjoying the unexpected day off. This thread = highly upset at the decision to close.

Im aware that APS can do anything it wants. They could cancel classes the next five days if they wanted. But looking at the comments here, i just wonder why they wouldn’t say on the website or in the email something like “dominion said power might shut off so as a precaution we are cancelling school.”

This happens so often with APS. I am pretty happy with APS but every time they cancel school people argue and speculate on various online forums, and I wonder why they don’t just don’t give a simple explanation. Like when there is no snow on the ground but it has snowed recently, they could say, “we are cancelling snow because on some roads it is still icy and there are big snow banks and school busses can’t safely navigate them.” But instead those of us who are curious and who ask get accused of complaining by people for whom this stuff is apparently so obvious that only a stupid person couldn’t figure it out.

Agreed, although I admit to being disturbed by (and frankly concerned for) those who seem ready to fire Duran because he happened to call a snow day.

“Here’s a day to just not log into DL. Tell them to sleep, read a book, relax, enjoy “

“how dare you my child needs to be learning!”
