It's not just the pandemic and schools that are temporarily closed (although we're in DC and Washington Teachers Union seems like they never want to return to work). For us, we no longer have confidence in DCPS because of WTU and the mayor's lack of willingness to reopen schools anyway. It's showed us how dysfunctional the school system is due to the entrenched teachers and politics. There are also other benefits such as VA state colleges/in-state tuition, better high school, etc. For some of us, the pandemic showed us how bad DCPS is and we can't unsee that. |
Here is the secret. Black people won’t move anywhere unless they see a good portion of other black people living somewhere. My friends and I would totally live in Ashburn but we don’t see enough of that so it’s not an option. Also we need black businesses. Easy example - If there aren’t a good amount of black hair salons for me I’m not going. Which is why many of us live in Alexandria, Maryland, Montgomery county, Woodbridge. If we don’t see people like us we probably won’t be there at the level Asians are moving there. My family actually lived on plantations out there during slave times but migrated into the DC area for better opportunity. |
|
Ashburn is ironic to say the least. Where dark skinned Asians first generation folks strive to live on former plantations.
Actually African Americans know better and stay in Maryland or DC |
| Other draw back is the extreme weather it has as compared to other closer in counties. More storms and snow falls there. Toll road is no good in ice and snow especially if you work in DC, Tysons. It’s just too dam@ far out. |
I had a nice women with kids working for me from Ashburn. It was a Ashburn to Bethesda commute. I told her we work from home in Friday’s. Ok to WFH if school closed due to snow and could work 8-4 to avoid traffic. Plus we got four weeks vacation and two weeks holidays So we are talking 46 weeks worth of four day workweeks. Over time she was late 815 to 845 but still left in time. Then became can I skip lunch and leave 345. Then us an issue at home take the day as even if had to wait for hvac guy was an issue. Wfh is fine but we have meetings in person she would flip last minute. Meaning she call two people to a conference room for a nine an meeting then dial in to her own in person meeting. The tolls and gas was huge. She lasted 12 months and apologized when she left. Meanwhile another guy lived same distance from work way out by Seneca which is past outer Potomac. But his drive was long but predictable with no tolls. Here was long but widely unpredictable with time of tolls. It also caused a bit of grief as she was highest paid mom in the entire dept and had the closer in moms picking up her slack. One connected why am I doing her work for less pay so she can live in a 7,000 square foot house while I live in a Rockville townhome |
Yeah Loudoun gets colder and gets more snow. It’s even worse out in Purcellville, etc. |
How is her being a mom or woman or the other person a man relevant to this? |
| Where the he$$ is Ashburn. Isn’t this near the airport where Redskins (yes I still call them the redskins) train? As one of the PP posted, land of the vast vinyl homes with zero mature trees! Yuck!! |
In this case if you most know all three women with kids were Asian. All three had husbands who barely did any child care responsibilities. All three of there husbands focused on there jobs. Every snow day and bus drop off and sick kid wife got stuck with. All three were “off the boat” two even had to take care if their in-laws medical stuff as that is what good daughter in laws do. They were very overwhelmed |
| If suburban hellscaoes like that are the answers then I really don't want to know the questions. |
Lol. Because Maryland’s history regarding slavery is so much better than Virginia’s...
|
It’s debatable whether the city or exurbs are greater hellscapes these days. |
My Ashburn house sits on 3/4 of an acre. House was built in 1989 so it is older but the trade-off is tons of mature trees. And a lot of space. |
Mature trees are great until they start dying. And at least on my street on Fairfax, a lot of big trees are dying, and they aren't cheap to take down. |
