Takoma Park MD if you're not woke

Anonymous
OP here: Thanks to everyone who provided info! I've always liked Takoma Park, esp the downtown area and some really nice old bungalows (got some family roots there too) ... and appreciate that there are lots of decent folks there of various political persuasions (albeit skewed leftward). I was hoping to "add it back onto the list" w/ DW but it sounds like we're right to focus on Silver Spring, Rock Creek Forest, Kensington etc. I still feel confident we could enjoy it, but with such a big decision, it's best to stick with neighborhoods that are in the overlapping part of our proverbial venn diagram.

Thanks!

Then I guess it's good that you live in the suburbs of Wichita.

lol, I live right in here in the DC area, in an HOA that bans political signs and solicitation

Both communities have an outspoken left-leaning contingent and then everyone else is chill. OP’s wife could be called a racist in Kensington just as easily. But it’s not likely to happen either place with the lifestyle OP described.

I agree with this. I’m on a progressive listserv in silver spring/Kensington and there are plenty of borderline annoying leftists on that too. But most people in the community are just normal.

FWIW, I formerly lived in takona park and liked it. We would have considered buying there but houses have gotten expensive. IME the stereotypical hippie leftists the town is known for tended to be older (generally). The young families moving in seem to be drawn to the community because it’s close-in, friendly, schools are decent, parks, and nice downtown.

Can you all say more about why? I’d describe myself the same way and we’ve been contemplating whether a move to TP would be good for our family.

Remember that left Democrats are not tolerant at all to any other perspective. If you are not very liberal you might feel “not among like minded people” and they will never stop trying to convert you.

I’m the +1, and that’s not how I’d put it. I just don’t think a lot of the people there are truly that liberal. I think TKPK has that reputation and there’s a lot of crunchiness (which I find irritating), which isn’t quite the same as progressive. It’s also a very expensive place to live, and to me that limits how truly progressive the citizens are.

Also, I think the line that Democrats are intolerant is tired garbage. Resisting racism doesn’t make you intolerant, it makes you a decent human being. I’m very liberal and very tolerant, but not of bigotry disguised as an alternate perspective or whatever euphemism people want to use. That goes for “Democrats” and Republicans.

+100

Seeing racism everywhere except your own racism is intolerant. Being anti-white is racist, and there's plenty of that among Democrats. Believing that any group should get a benefit only because of their race is racist (no matter what group it is). Believing that people of a certain race should be treated poorly is racist. Dems think they are not racist because they flip who should get rewards by race (or punishment by race), but guess what - that's racist.

Takoma Park is actually many cities in one. There is a conservative SDA community that includes Republicans.

As a former SDA, I have yet to meet a Republican SDA.

No. Kensington has a much bigger conservative (mostly Catholic) crowd. I don’t think people in TP would be intolerant, but would you have common ground with your neighbors? It’s a very politically active community.

Yes, Takoma Park is a great community if you’re an activist or want to be.

That describes parts of TKPK, but not the majority of residents. If you want to pretend that the liberal minority living near Old Town is driving everyone else away, how do you account for the huge SDA population that skews socially conservative?

SDAs are not conservative, at least in the way of Dem vs. R.

What are your experiences?

Please define what you mean by "not woke" than we can give an opinion

How right? Trump signs on the lawn? Pro Life bumper stickers?

No not MAGA-right ... attend evangelical church, prefer lower taxes, but generally just go about our business.

If you live in Takoma Park than you will be paying more taxes so I would say no. Personally if you are quiet about your beliefs and are friendly yourself I don't think they will run you out of town.

That's because it is TaKOMA park, dude. And honestly who cares?

LOL

Do you know how many people live in TP don't even have cars?

TP is not all white upper class liberals. It has a sizeable working class / immigrant / POC population. But DCUM posters always tend to ignore those residents in whatever jurisdiction they are, as if they don't count.

How do you define “woke”?

Is the opposite “asleep”?

If you want to live somewhere “asleep,” maybe Reston is good for you.

Virtue signaling, dogmatic, ideological people who firmly believe they're on the right side of history and sneer at those who don't agree with them as lesser species. You know, the people who call you racist no matter what you say, transphobic no matter what you say, etc, and that you are the second coming of you know what just for daring to vote differently. They pride themselves for being tolerant and open-minded while simultaneously being the most intolerant and judgmental people.

Liberal who drives a Subaru here. I can't stand those darn Coexist bumper stickers. They strike me as so grossly performative and preachy that I get angry at an irrational level every time I see one.
