Is Summer Residential Governor’s Schools a big deal?

Of what my daughter's counselor said that the lady that heads up the Governor's school program recently retired. And her job has not been filled yet. They are trying but not doing well at getting their act together.

Wow. They better email and tell the kids. These kids agreed to accept the spot if offered. Meanwhile other opportunities are gone.

Exactly. We haven't applied anywhere else because of that agreement.

I think the agreement is null and void if you consider the dates reference in the application process - April 14. At this point, we are making the best decision to move forward with some other things. 2-3 weeks it's into possible mid-May. If this was a one week program, that would be less impactful. But this is a one month obligation.

VDOE incompetence. Wow.

I have heard on good authority decisions will be coming out early next week-hang in there!!

On VDOE website today:

“The Virginia Department of Education is aware of the concern relating to the delay in releasing selections for the Summer Residential Governor's School programs. Please be aware that we are currently working with the program providers to finalize the selections. We hope to have all selections made and selections communicated by the first week of May.”

Is anyone thinking, like I am, if they can’t get it together in the selection process, maybe a sign that it will be disorganized in the program? It’s a 4 week program.

Also, what percentage of the kids make the final round? Do most that go to this state review make it in?

Yes, the lack of organization is also making me apprehensive about how the summer program will be executed. They certainly aren't off to a great start.

As far as numbers go, you can read this document from the VDOE site that outlines the number of nomination quotas available to each county in the state. If I'm interpreting it correctly, it appears that the VPA program takes up to 1,530 nominations for 250 spots. So that would be 16% chance of getting in, if every county / private school group utilized their entire nomination quota.

Other programs are also discussed in this document.

For the numbers you quote above-don’t they weed out apps at the county level before the state level? How many of the 1530 total advance to states?

Those are the numbers that advance to the final round at the state level. Each county is allowed so many nominations to put forward to the state. These are the quota numbers available across the state. Some of the counties might not send their full quota so the number could be lower, but if everyone sent in he maximum available that would be the number competing in the final round. The document also lists the number of applicants per county allowed for the prior round of auditions. Those numbers are approximately doubled.

It's also a little more complicated than that - VPA for example is 5 different programs - voice, instrument, dance, art and theatre. Those programs have different slices of that final 250 number. So there are 306 possible nomination for dance, instrument, art, etc. The dance program has way less kids than the voice program out of the accepted 250, but they probably don't actually get the full 306 state level nominations either. Where voice on the other hand, probably gets most of the quota submitted.

Also, for the academic programs each county is guaranteed accepted one slot so as to spread the wealth. So if your the only kid applying from some small county, you're 100% getting in. But if on the other hand your from a large county like Fairfax, your chances are much lower since you are competing against all those other applicants.

I've been following and see from the numbers (thank you pp) that my DC probably has very little chance. Yes, made it to the state level, but I don't expect DC to get in with those numbers.

Summer job search time!

Still haven’t heard anything.

Still nothing. Beyond ridiculous. This is a 4 week program, a huge commitment. Really bad form.
