If you could say honestly you had 1 white wine spritzer with 2 oz of wine about once a week ... no biggie. But if your "serving" is a giant 6oz glass of wine and you drink 3-4 nights/week ... that is a problem.

I don't like that your DH pressures you either.

I will tell you the truth, which is that I drank lightly (like 2oz of wine 2x/week) and would not do it again if I had another baby. It's a very short period of time, and my general parenting values (now that I have a kid) are to be very discerning and risk averse about my child's health.

What does this mean (bolded)?

I mean, I think they exaggerate on how bad truly light drinking is, given that there's no strong evidence for it being bad. The question is whether OP is actually engaged in "light drinking." https://systematicreviewsjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/2046-4053-3-1

I completely disagree with you, but I know a number of fetal alcohol babies. Alcohol is bad for your fetus. Period.

But how much did these fetal babies moms drink while pregnant? Context matters. Any doctor worth their salt will tell you that there is a huge difference in risks to the baby with a pregnant woman who is a heavy drinker vs. one who has an occasional glass of wine.

Hello, no amount of alcohol is a good thing for any baby.

Can you back up your claim that “any” amount of alcohol is “bad” for your baby? No, you can’t. So quit repeating it over and over.

Her “claim” is that no amount of alcohol is a good thing for any baby. So, how about you point us to some studies that alcohol is a good thing for a baby. I’ll wait.

hey, too much water is bad for your baby. Anything can be bad in excessive amounts. I agree OP has an issue but the whole “no amount has been proven safe” is a) stupid scaremongering and b) not supported by research.

You missed the point. But- do whatever you have to do to justify drinking while pregnant. I honestly don’t care, not my baby.

Most American women have to drive in order to live a normal life. I live in a walkable area and can go without driving but most can’t in order to work, but food, go to the doctor etc.

However there is absolutely NO reason to drink while pregnant. It’s cimpletley unnecessary.

You know what PP. I am a DP. But your black and white views on this are preventing the OP of this thread from getting real advice. She probably has a problem, occasional drinkers and abstainers agree. But because of people like you erasing room for nuance and degree, she will be able to write off all the concern. And she shouldn't. So I hope you're proud of yourself.

Alcohol is a known teratogen. The”research” everyone keeps throwing around supports this. How much alcohol is required to affect the fetus is unknown. So no, this isn’t scaremongering. Why take a known or unknown risk if you don’t have to?

I didn’t drink during any of my pregnancies but I also know this is a lie. Nobody took my blood post-delivery.

Depending on where you give birth, you may have your blood drawn for a tox screen. The baby will as well. However, as poor of a choice as it is, alcohol is not an illegal substance. Therefore, the SW would NOT refer you to CPS as they would if you or baby screen positive for PCP or something.

Alright folks, I am pretty sure the OP checked out a long time ago. Let's move on, shall we?

You know that not every organism has to survive? Humans are not in the brink of extinction.

The responses in this thread are getting crazy.

OP: the science says that some *light* drinking is probably fine. But what you're describing doesn't sound light, and it doesn't sound like a healthy relationship with alcohol whether you're pregnant or not. You shouldn't be using alcohol to cope with anxiety, and your husband shouldn't need a drinking buddy or be pressuring you to drink when you're not inclined to do so. Talk to your OB about this, hopefully with your husband present. Sounds like you both need a wakeup call.

(This is coming from an occasional glass of wine while pregnant mom.)

So is barbecued food and bacon, but nobody engages in moral panic about that.
