I'm not saying I'm incapable of making sensible choices. I feel more full when I eat out 3 meals a day then when I cook at home. I will always eat slightly more when I eat out, which is usually two or three nights a week, but I'm not gorging myself I'm just eating differently than I do at home. My typical breakfast is coffee and a bite of what my kids are eating, a normal lunch for me is a small serving of sauteed veggies, early dinner is roasted chicken and veggies or a NY strip for all of us. I choose to indulge when I go out, which is why I eat carefully at home. When I go out for a week straight with my in-laws it messes up the whole balance.

You really don't understand choosing to eat nonindulgently when you go out?

I'm not clear how you define things -- "eating slightly more" = "indulging" -- but if not feeling stuffed is important to you, make the choice that enables that to happen.

Or hang around feeling like a gorged tick. But don't blame the restaurant.

So you consume what, 500 calories a day? Yikes

I don't think we're going to be able to address that here, but it is a little worrisome that her kids are getting so little food ("Here's your share of the steak!"). They probably love visiting the grandparents because there's food abounding.

My kids get plenty of stuff that I don't eat like pasta, cheese sticks, rice, and I eat way more than 500 calories a day. I'm also a personal chef, so I do taste at work... but my specialty is healthy cooking. The tasting at work definitely adds up, though! Maybe 100 extra calories just in making sure flavors are right. I love to splurge on higher calorie or more indulgent dishes when I am out, because I love food. I also realize there is a balance. I don't eat butter, dairy, grains, or sugar at home. I occasionally taste them at work. I like to eat them out because that's special to me. I don't know why everyone is hypercritical. It's just a fact that I don't eat bread most of the time and I might have yogurt and granola, or a piece of toast at a restaurant and feel bloated and "rolling" it's not a big deal...

Lol. This is my Dad, the weirdo eater and anorexic. He will sit there and eat kale smoothies and boiled kohlrabi but admonish us for " dead or manufactured" foods and that is if he eats at all. Then, he will sneak out and eat a steak and salad while we starve. He hates full pantries and fridges. He is awestruck at our pantry and fridge but happily eats my cherry pie and empanadas and Lemon Sunday cake.

similar problem here.

We 4 visit the inlaws and they do breakfast and 4pm dinner, that's it. So we plan lunches out with our hometown friends or buy more food.

Oddly enough, when THEY visit US, they eat 4 meals a day, snack and drink constantly, and demand dessert with every dinner. CHEAPOS.
