I Miss Target!

I'm concerned OP's kids are growing up in a bustling, diverse, interesting city and spend all their time trying on clothes at TARGET.

^^ but I should add that if I had teens that were super-excited to try on Target clothes I would concede defeat in parenting cool kids. That is not where any normal kid would be caught dead trying clothes on. Kinda reminds me of seeing friends when I was out shopping at JC Penny with my mom when i was a kid.

haven't the fitting rooms at the Target on Rte 50 always been unisex?

Yes. It has literally never crossed my mind to worry about sending my kids in there OP is a freak show. I feel sorry for her daughter.

Assault and harassment are illegal. Period. No matter where they take place. No, an attendant can't single a man out for being in a closed stall next to women who are also in a closed stall. But they can--and should--monitor for actual negative behaviors. Being a man (or a trans individual or a certain race or whatever) is not, in and of itself, a threat of negative behavior.

Exactly, I just look for the sign that says, dressing room, and try on clothes that way. I will take a few extra steps out of respect for other customers to use a dressing room so I am not right next to someone.

The OP won't boycott anything. When people say, I will avoid such and such place, it rarely ever happens, mostly out of convenience.

Oh, but you're wrong about that. I know that I will be paying more at other stores (like getting detergent at the grocery store or whatever), but I'm absolutely serious about this. I will not be shopping at Target again until this policy is reversed. This includes the DC area and where we spend our summers at the beach. Yes, it will be inconvenient in some ways, but we will adapt. And, probably save money in the long run because my short trips to Target always end up in buying more than intended.

If you are spending too much money at Target, you got bigger issues.

At least Target sells quality merchandise, something Wal-Mart has yet to figure out.

Yes, of course there is always the risk of creeps hiding in dressing rooms at Target and I guess anywhere else for that matter. The difference is that now, they are welcome there and -- at least according to the manager I spoke briefly with at the CH store -- there is "really nothing they can do about it." I took that to mean that the person at the entrance of the female dressing room door has no authority to say, "excuse me sir, the men's fitting room is over there," to at least call attention to women who may be in the dressing room and not be comfortable, that a man is trying to enter. (Does that make sense?!)

Everyone is worried about their daughters now. Were you not concerned about your sons before this?

I'm concerned that you are an out of touch snob.

I have no interest in producing "cool kids." Too often, those are the kids that get in trouble.

This is Target's policy:

"We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity."

I don't know if OP has ever seen a trans woman, but normally, she will look like a woman and you would never notice her in the woman's restroom - she would look odd, and understandably feel uncomfortable, going into the men's room, which is why this policy exists. Would you be comfortable with a trans man with a beard going into the women's changing room with your teen girls, just because he had lady parts?

I'm pretty sure OP believes that a trans woman is essentially just a big dude with a terrible wig on who is faking his way into the dressing room because he's a pedophile.

Hmmm, nope, just someone who thinks OP is ridiculous in many ways.

Unrelated maybe but for the people who still don't get it, you'd push to send this child to the men's room? Why?

+1 I'm pretty sure OP doesn't realize that there is a difference between someone who is transgender, a cross dresser, and a pervert.
