Interesting thread. I am one who would pretty much go anywhere anytime. I loved Seoul but was horrified at the Americans who pitched a fit over the different food! They were embarrassing!
I did turn down a trip to India because I had a baby. The idea of flying that far with an infant and grapple with boiling everything was unappealing. I would go now that the kids are older though. |
On a personal level, I agree. I am from one of the places frequently mentioned on these threads and I think so many people really have no idea what they are missing. I've also had the good fortune to travel extensively and some of my favorite places in the world are mentioned multiple times on this thread. But the question is where do you have no desire to go - and everyone is entitled to their own priorities. There are very few places I have no interest in going but I'd be lying if I said there was no where. And even more - there are so many places I do actively want to go that many lovely places in the world fall to the lower end of the list. But I will say, I see a lot of gross generalizations and misconceptions as reasons not to go somewhere on this these threads - that is sad I think. |
Haha! This one made me laugh. My husband had to go to Turkmenistan on an open ended business trip. Said it was literally the worst place on earth. |
I agree with these, plus a cruise (norovirus outbreak), Florida, Atlantic City, Texas. |

Bolivia is amazing. You are missing out! Google Salares de Uyuni. So amazing. |
| Count me out for any of the -stan countries. |
Me, too! We are in the Foreign Service. We try to get posted to places we think we would never visit, and we are always pleasantly surprised. |

| India and China. I know they would be fascinating, but I think the poverty and pollution would be too overwhelming. |

China (pollution, hygiene) even though I know there are spectacular things to see there.
Russia (hostile govt) even though I'd love to see the palace architecture. India (poverty, hygiene, smell, disease). I always wanted to go to see the architecture and eat my favorite cuisine and see all those beautiful textiles, but everyone I've met in the last 10 years who's been (and I'm talking very worldly, extremely experienced travelers who work for State, in the IC, and so on) say it was the pits of hell and they all were sick for weeks and hated it completely. I don't know. They scared me off pretty well, but I'll probably still go someday if I can afford a good tour and hopefully avoid dysentery or whatever it is everyone gets there. After a weeklong battle with girardia after a trip to Mexico, I can do without any more disgusting intestinal issues. |
^^that should be WEEKSlong, as in the entire spring of 2008. |

Alaska -not enough people around and I am a hot weather and beach type
Las Vegas -would never choose to go here because I have no interest in gambling and buffets and minimal interest in daydrinking Disney -but I would go if my kid wanted to and was old enough to remember and enjpy it I would rather go somewhere off the wall most of the time. Heck, I'd love to visit a -stan or too. Samarkand would be an awesome place to visit in my book |
