I just want to re-iterate, I appreciate the PTA volunteers, and all the other volunteers. Some of the things posted on here are comments that people may not be comfortable stating face to face.

Bad principals are definitely a bitch to deal with. They need to go.

But in MCPS they just shift around or even promote. No one ever gets fired. Even employees that sexually harass or abuse kids quietly get moved until it becomes public knowledge.

And definitely agreeing with others... Boosterthon is terrible. I think if the principal tried to get rid of it, that would be a step in the right direction. Caring more about all families, the feelings of kids, and the use of class time over $$$$. The great principals look at the contracts and say NO way, not in my school. Let's brainstorm a better way to raise money without dealing with corporations.

If you want to get rid of Boosterthon at your school you don't have to work your way up in the PTA. Do the following:

1. Write a letter to your principal and copy her supervisor, the area superintendent, the superintendent, the BOE members and the state superintendent's office. The superintendent and the BOE are important to have on there or her supervisor will just throw away your letter. You are copying the state superintendent's office because its a reduction in instructional time to allow a commercial company to jointly raise funds for the school and profits for the company.

Focus on the aspects relevant to what MCPS is responsible for and the conduct of their employee, the principal. (1) Be specific on the repeated interruption of instructional class time. Its not just one event but Boosterthon employees are entering the classroom everyday interrupting class time. (2) Advocate for the kids that can't afford to bring in donors and how they are shamed in class and being excluded from incentive parties. (3) Don't forget to include the principal's conduct. The principal will tell her supervisor that the contract is with the PTA and she is just supporting the organization. She may even lie and say she doesn't like it while on the other end she is pressuring the PTA to do it because she gets the money. Include how the principal is championing it , pressuring the community and whatever actions she is taking. She's an employee not a sovereign ruler.

2. Tell others -widely. Use your school directory. Your PTA is not going to let you use their mailing list to send a PSA about their Boosterthon. There is nothing stopping you from copying all the email addresses out of the directory you get every year and sending out email letting all the parents know how much Boosterthon takes. If parents don't participate, it will not be renewed. You can even set up a "Stop Boosterthon at Your School Name" on change.or. Include the link in your email.

I have a huge problem with Booster-thon keeping 50% of my donation, but I have an ever larger problem with the other 50% going to the RPES PTA. The treasurer is completely incompetent. When he was caught not having reconciled the books for months (and not even understanding a basic cash flow!), nothing was done except to collect cash in buckets (literally!) at the school talent show to make up for the deficit he had caused. He has not been replaced. He should have been removed immediately. PTA members have no information or anyway to weigh in on decisions unless they are on the board. The PTA meetings that are open/announced are just guest speakers. It is a joke.

I sleep just fine, thanks, because I am an honest person. Please detail any specifics in my post that were incorrect.

Where did the post go with Boosterthon's sliding scale contract? I guess someone reported it to be deleted. Hmmm?

Sliding scale contract here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cregister/DownloadPDF.aspx?AttachmentID=df406e3f-5b12-4fba-86e0-4aeb1db395cf

The problem is if someone did that and the money comes up really short, Boosterthon takes 70% for the people that didn't get the memo. The PTA board already decided to do this fundraiser without any PTA vote and paid them a non refundable deposit of a few thousand dollars. Then the bank account went into the negatives. It is not pretty.

I see no reason to do anything to make a morally questionable fundraising scam successful. Letting Boosterthon take 70% this year and then publicizing that fact might be just what's needed to keep us from going through this again two years from now.
