Downton 2/24

I've been wondering why none of the suitors are interested in Rose. She's a fresh-faced ingenue with money and a title... why no interest?

I also wish one of them would take a liking to Edith. Aside from her sad-sack ways, she's my favorite. I loved the last scene when she marched out of the drawing room after announcing she would be going back to Switzerland (presumably, for her baby). She finally had a fire in her eyes, but I feel terrible for the Swiss family.

I think the implication is that everyone likes Mary because she's oh-so-sharp and witty, as opposed to Rose, who is a pretty shell. But who knows. I agree that Edith needs more of a life. What was that line Mary said about how she'd rather sleep on the roof than share a roof with Edith? Poor Edith.

Oooh, and at one point Edith said to her aunt something like: No offense, but you are not a mother. But, maybe she is? But then, wouldn't the aunt confide in Edith to make her feel better? But, maybe not if Edith is her daughter? I don't know....

Have you heard the Hull accent?

She was just presented to the court, so is only now officially eligible. That didn't matter to the jazz singer, but presumably it would to the upper crust. Maybe now there will be a Rose/Mary/suitor love triangle to spice things up.

Yes and when Edith said that to her aunt, did you see the reaction shot? How they lingered on the aunt's face? That aunt is a mother; they are alluding to it.

Rosamund's background per Downton Abbey Wikipedia:

Lady Rosamund Painswick (née Crawley, b. 1870 or before) is the widow of a very wealthy banker, the late Marmaduke Painswick and the daughter of the previous Earl of Grantham and Violet Crawley; her closest ally within the family is her only sibling Robert. She is the sister-in-law of Cora, aunt of Lady Mary, Lady Edith and the late Lady Sybil, aunt-in-law of the late Matthew Crawley and Tom Branson and great-aunt of Sybbie Branson and George Crawley.
She lives in London by herself on 35 Eaton Square. She likes to meddle in family affairs and has a very close bond to Robert and Downton Abbey[1].

I think Rose isn't as popular because Pinky is broke. Mary has an estate that she's managing for her son on the other hand.

I do wish Mary and Edith got some friends though. Why do they never have any close girl friends?

Are Pinky and Shrimpy the same person?

It seems to me that Mary having an eldest son already should complicate future pairings- whomever she ends up with will not have his own son with her who will be the heir of Downton, outside of some tragedy befalling George. That doesn't seem to be deterring the suitors, though.

I'd imagine it would be easier to maintain friendships in London. They live in the boondocks and aren't going to strike up friendships with the lowly locals.

Yes shrimpy not pinky!! I forgot his name.

Good point about Mary seemingly not being as eligible since George will inherit, and not Mary's next kids with the new man.

All these men hanging around waiting for Mary is just absurd. It has been well-over a year, the last episode was about 9 months ago and they've been there before that, I'd think they would move on.

This certainly isn't a child-centric household!

So…which Cora/Lord G daughter is really the aunt's daughter? Think Edith is really the aunt's daughter?

Or do you think the aunt just has some kid out there same as Edith?

Interesting - especially since she looks different (lighter hair, less delicate features) than Cora and the other two girls.

But isn't the aunt a widow? That was referenced at one point. Why would she need to give her baby to her brother? Unless she got married later in life, I guess.

I think the implication would be that she for pregnant before marriage and gave the baby to Robert and Cora, who were already married.

Did anyone else find Roberts indignation about the prince funny considering his own make out session w the maid a few seasons ago?

Prince of Wales did a lot more than just make out! He ultimately fooled around with many woman and scandalously abdicated when he became king to marry the american divorceé, Wallis Simpson.

Oh God yes. She is the most annoying character ever. I hate how everything she says sounds like a question.

That's the Yorkshire accent (and lots of other northern English, Scottish, Northern Irish accents), love it or not.

I've personally known people with those accents who don't say everything as a question. Not buying it.
