I recall that daisy said that the American valet's attraction and compliments to her would last her (keep her happy) all the way through summer (I don't recall the exact phrasing, but that was the gist).

she said she was so "chuffed" it would last her through the summer. So, yes, you're right--she was just happy. It's exactly what Mrs. Patmore said she needed.

Oh, good. Hopefully she is moving past Alfred. It seems like she would be a good catch for a shop owner or better-off land owner (more so since she will be coming into that farm), guess there just aren't that many men her age around to marry after the war.

Especially not since she's toiling away in a basement kitchen all the time. Getting out and circulating socially seems to be a rare treat.

How old is Daisy now?! I feel like 10 years have passed in downton time, but she still acts and looks like a teenager.

Oh God yes. She is the most annoying character ever. I hate how everything she says sounds like a question.

I found amusing that the Earl put together his own Plumbers team, with Bates as the head of special operations. Supposedly Bates picked up a few skills while in prison, but I have the feeling that he handled some unsavory tasks for Grantham when they served together in the British army,

Well, Grantham did indicate that he's no stranger to homosexuality...

That's the Yorkshire accent (and lots of other northern English, Scottish, Northern Irish accents), love it or not.

Do you think Mr. Blake has a chance at Mary? I'm rooting for him. I was annoyed that he's really a member of the aristocracy and going to inherit a huge estate, though.

Do you think Mr. Bates killed Mr. Green? Here's what I think:

I think Mr. Bates went to London to see Mr. Green, and when he found him, Bates told Green that his wife is going to turn Green into the police, and then Bates told Green what happens to rapists in prison. I think Green threw himself in front of the bus out of fear of what he would endure in prison.

Other theories?

Can someone clarify who the young woman was hanging out with Prince of Wales on the episode? She accompanied him to Rose's ball and made him dance the first dance with Rose.

I agree about Edith. She's become a sad sack character, which is annoying. I thought her path was going to take an interesting turn in terms of quasi-professional development. Maybe she'd become a journalist, maybe she'd become a newspaper editor. Maybe she'd move to London and start living her lown life there. But no, instead there's a stupid plot line about her disappearing man and the sad plot line about her baby. Her idea of giving it to the tenant farmer and hoping nobody notices she's always down there visiting is just stupid.

I loved Carson in this episode, and his huffing, tut-tutting, eyebrow-raising, and humphing. The end scene with him and Mrs. Hughes was very sweet.

I don't love Daisy but I was happy for her and laughed when she said she was so "chuffed." And I am THRILLED to say goodbye to the annoying Ivy.

Mary is opportunistically now highly interested in Blake, since she now knows he's going to be rich. Ugh. I wish Mary would have some of Edith's bad luck and Edith could catch many of the breaks that Mary catches.

The portrayal of the Americans was kind of irritating. Too caricatured. For example, Harold would know not to just introduce himself to the prince. All Americans are not country bumpkins, Julian Fellowes. But the American manservant was hilarious, especially when he was asking Carson for the low-down on whether Daisy was attached or not.

I agree with the PP who said that the schoolteacher is annoying. Tom deserves much better! I loved the way Tom bitchslapped the oily Thomas back to his proper place.

It's time we find out what Thomas has on Baxter. They've been dragging it out all season and never revealed it. What's her past??

As usual, loved the dresses!

It didn't appear to me that the Earl knew that Bates was the forger. So among other things Bates is a forger and pickpocket.

I would be interested to know if he is actually an American actor. He seemed to have that overdone American accent like the (actually British) jazz singer.

Michael Benz grew up in London, attended Georgetown, and studied at RADA, so I'm guessing he has, at best, a mid-Atlantic accent that got awkwardly nudged into a full-blown American one.

Ah Downton 11 or the Sampson Job! It was pretty silly how many family members were roped into recovering the stolen letter. At least it was a welcomed break from most of the dialogue explaining protocol. Get on with an actual storyline already!

I too thought I'd skipped an episode when Edith was back from having the baby. Her parents seem to be the most clueless people in the world, but at least Lord Grantham actually seems to care.

Why every eligible bachelor have set their sights on Mary is a mystery and having Mr. Blake being from the aristocracy---blech!

There hasn't been much in terms of character development and most seem rather one-note...
Edith, whiny
Lady Grantham, insipid
Daisy, sourpuss
Rose, vapid
Barrow--expecting him to twiddle his fingers Mr. Burns style and mutter, "Excellent."
Branson, deflated balloon

The teacher, ugh, very obnoxious. It would have been much more interesting if she were a plucky suffragette that Tom feels guilty falling for out of reverence for Sybil's memory. However, the character is so annoying that I would have clapped if he'd tossed her off the balcony.

And we saw Bates' forgery skills at the beginning of the season, when he forged Molesley's signature on a fake IOU so Bates could give him some money without Molesley losing face. I find Bates kind of interesting because his misdeeds are very much a "means justify the ends" approach, and otherwise he's a good guy, but with a dark side.

13:31, Bates is similar to Thomas from season 2 of Upstairs Downstairs. In many cases, Thomas found a way to help his employers ... while benefiting himself -- the best examples are when he managed to get £500 from Mr. Bellamy to marry Sarah (which he was planning to do anyway) and where he managed to get the blackmailer away from Mr. and Mrs. Bellamy.

And yes, Molesley will hopefully be having better things happen to him in Season 5.

"My .. WHAT?!?"

I, too, have really come to like Molesley, but I worry now that he'll be in Thomas Barrow's crosshairs for inspiring Baxter to refuse to do his bidding.
