Downton 2/24

I've personally known people with those accents who don't say everything as a question. Not buying it.

A large part of it is going to be because of her position. It would be perceived as uppity & rude for her to make statements to her superiors (which most people would be to her). A questioning tone makes it seem she is asking permission, much more appropriate for her lot in life. It has probably been so ingrained that it has just become her speech pattern.

Maybe it is different in England and that was the document she signed or a document related to the POA. If the "brown shirts" killed Gregson, Edith might have a stake in his newspaper. This could be her ultimate triumph. I vote for Bates as investigative reporter, Mrs Patmore as Agony Aunt, Tom for political reporting and Isis for animal column

I love how much dumb Lord Grantham loves that dumb dog

I want Tom to find a woman who will put that arse Barrow in his place. Can you imagine what "my Sybil" (I love when he calls her that) would have done?

Here's what gets me about the dog - she's been around since the beginning of season 1, which in Downton time is a decade ago. She would be OOOOOOOLD by now.

Oh God yes. She is the most annoying character ever. I hate how everything she says sounds like a question.

That's the Yorkshire accent (and lots of other northern English, Scottish, Northern Irish accents), love it or not.

I think we're all aware Daisy has a Yorkshire accent. Still annoying.

Exactly! There are other characters with a Yorkshire accent who don't have that annoying high pitched upturn at the end of every single line they utter. She's like a perpetual teenager and it's annoying. By now, she'd have to be in her mid to late 20's. She needs to grow up. All of these footmen/cooks/maids and their endless juvenile love triangles are so tedious.

yes, only Mary is allowed (loveless) love-triangles.

They hate her and want her gone. Or they're in India or something.

They're in India. That would have been a hell of a long trip in those days. Plus, they were broke and had to sell their Scottish estate. Plus she and her mother hate each other, and her mom and dad hate each other, so they're not exactly the picture of a close, loving family!

A thousand times Amen! If they hook her up with that insufferable godfather I will scream.

So…which Cora/Lord G daughter is really the aunt's daughter? Think Edith is really the aunt's daughter?

Or do you think the aunt just has some kid out there same as Edith?

Holy, holy shit! THAT would be a story if Edith were really her aunt's daughter. They DO both have red/blonde hair and all the other Grantham ladies have/had dark hair. HMMMM. Juicy idea!

Am I the only one who finds Rose enjoyable?

Why do people find him insufferable? I think he seems warm and sweet and smitten.

Pharaoh was the dog in season 1. Isis arrived season 2. Not sure how old that makes her.

Interesting - especially since she looks different (lighter hair, less delicate features) than Cora and the other two girls.

But isn't the aunt a widow? That was referenced at one point. Why would she need to give her baby to her brother? Unless she got married later in life, I guess.

I think the implication would be that she for pregnant before marriage and gave the baby to Robert and Cora, who were already married.

Did anyone else find Roberts indignation about the prince funny considering his own make out session w the maid a few seasons ago?

Prince of Wales did a lot more than just make out! He ultimately fooled around with many woman and scandalously abdicated when he became king to marry the american divorceé, Wallis Simpson.

I thought the finale's dialogue foreshadowing the Wallis Simpson affair was a little too heavy-handed.

Right, but Robert / Lord G doesn't know that now. My point is that it's not like he is this pinnacle of marital fidelity, yet he is oh-so-shocked (even made some comment like "don't the people deserve a happy marriage in the Palace?") at the letter.

No, Lord G would have known about the romances. The story line is a rip off from a Sherlock Holmes story.

Royal affairs popularized having affairs for the upper crust. Watch the Manor House on Amazon Prime. The shooting party weekends were basically a free pass for bed hoping and popularized putting the name of the inhabitant of the room on the door so people didn't get the wrong room.

Whoops, "hopping." And, FYI, A Scandal in Bohemia is the story.
