A large part of it is going to be because of her position. It would be perceived as uppity & rude for her to make statements to her superiors (which most people would be to her). A questioning tone makes it seem she is asking permission, much more appropriate for her lot in life. It has probably been so ingrained that it has just become her speech pattern. |
Here's what gets me about the dog - she's been around since the beginning of season 1, which in Downton time is a decade ago. She would be OOOOOOOLD by now. |
Exactly! There are other characters with a Yorkshire accent who don't have that annoying high pitched upturn at the end of every single line they utter. She's like a perpetual teenager and it's annoying. By now, she'd have to be in her mid to late 20's. She needs to grow up. All of these footmen/cooks/maids and their endless juvenile love triangles are so tedious. |
yes, only Mary is allowed (loveless) love-triangles. |
They're in India. That would have been a hell of a long trip in those days. Plus, they were broke and had to sell their Scottish estate. Plus she and her mother hate each other, and her mom and dad hate each other, so they're not exactly the picture of a close, loving family! |
A thousand times Amen! If they hook her up with that insufferable godfather I will scream. |
Holy, holy shit! THAT would be a story if Edith were really her aunt's daughter. They DO both have red/blonde hair and all the other Grantham ladies have/had dark hair. HMMMM. Juicy idea! |
Am I the only one who finds Rose enjoyable? |
Why do people find him insufferable? I think he seems warm and sweet and smitten. |
Pharaoh was the dog in season 1. Isis arrived season 2. Not sure how old that makes her. |
I thought the finale's dialogue foreshadowing the Wallis Simpson affair was a little too heavy-handed. |
still old for a dog. like 9 years older then instead of 10 |
Right, but Robert / Lord G doesn't know that now. My point is that it's not like he is this pinnacle of marital fidelity, yet he is oh-so-shocked (even made some comment like "don't the people deserve a happy marriage in the Palace?") at the letter. |
No, Lord G would have known about the romances. The story line is a rip off from a Sherlock Holmes story.
Royal affairs popularized having affairs for the upper crust. Watch the Manor House on Amazon Prime. The shooting party weekends were basically a free pass for bed hoping and popularized putting the name of the inhabitant of the room on the door so people didn't get the wrong room. |
Whoops, "hopping." And, FYI, A Scandal in Bohemia is the story. |
