CogAt scores letter?

I think their goal is a lower population. Hence the new testing format. The number of kids in AAP has gotten out of control and is negatively impacting gen Ed classes.

I am not sure if it will affect the number of kids in AAP. Since last year my son got 97 percentile in age group and 95 percentile in grade group but still he was not in pool because his score was 131.
This year they are not considering the age percentile and no score.

Unbelievable that the new test is not normed for age-can that really be true? The NNAT and WISC are-doesn't make sense and if true would certainly favor an older child at the time of test taking.

Well, age is listed on the results page, so I'm thinking that it was taken into consideration.

Yes, age is normed for the new test. Relax!

Centreville elementary anyone? Got scores/ letters?

No, the scores for this year's second grade CogAT are not adjusted by age. I am the poster who called the testing office and spoke with a specialist with in-depth knowledge of the test. I told him I would not post his name to DCUM, but the testing office phone number is (571) 423-1400 if anyone wishes to call and get the same info themselves.

Well, I was told that the scores take into account age. Tell ya what...get FCPS to provide all the information for the CogAT and we will see who is correct. The flyer that came home is useless and age is noted, one of the few pieces of actual data. Even the student ID is missing!

Anyone notice how the CogAT address label had your primary language listed? Odd!

I suppose for the purposes of the screening committe, the test serves its purpose. It is not supposed to be a tool helpful to parents, but only to identify the top 5% of FCPS 2nd grade students to be automatically screened for AAP. Period. Seems that they did not want to cast as wide a net. For parents that want to know more about their children's abilities for academic planning purposes, a WISC or outside testing seems necessary. The little one pager that was sent with the "custom" CogAT scores contain very little meaningful information.

Mine didn't. Your school was probably just indicating what language the cover letter should be in.

If funny FCPS actually sent out meaningful data but most of you parents seem to be too dumb to see it. Thats ironic since its all about your kid trying to qualify for the AAP pool. You want your kid in, just refer. Its that simple. Oh but let me guess, you dont want to fork over the 4 hundy for the wisc and you think FCPS is forking you so you have to go that route.
Anyway this percentile data is rating your kid against all others in Fairfax county only. A 132 a year ago or any previous since that was based on a universe of all kids taking the cogat across the US. A 132 now probably would have translated into something like 138-140 on the old system. Average SATs in Fairfax county are 10% higher than the nation. I dont think you can throw the full 10% on top of 132 but I think the 138-140 would be a reasonable forecast.
Considering the percentiles were sent, it does not really matter what the iqish score is. The point is to create a threshold to automatically join the aap pool without referral. That was accomplished. Would you people be happier if they sent a iq type of score as well, say 128 was the threshold to make it for this year and your kid scored 127 and did not make it. Its the same result either way.

Looking at this chart
http://www.iqcomparisonsite.com/SATIQ.aspx
95 percentile is 123. When looking at scores at fairfax kids only, that sounds realistic to me. In the end it might not make any difference with the in pool outcome anyway and probably does not.

The letter that went with it was translated into many different languages. It was probably so that they knew what language to attach the letter for.

Name your source.

I seriously can't imagine FCPS having age-scored the CogAT. That's a very complicated process, actually. And, the letter specifically says it's compared to other 2nd-graders in Fairfax County that took the test. I believe the PP that said s/he spoke with someone in the testing office.
