Private & Independent Schools
Sure, whatever you say. You've been called out for making veiled threats. That's enough for me. You can go back to reading your spy novels and playing video games in your parents basement now. |

This is a wild forum. As a person with an old Landon affiliation, I was curious what was being said. I am glad I checked in to get a picture of how looney it can get out there. Jeff, thanks for your detective work.
I am amazed by the vitriol directed towards a bunch of children who attend a pretty good school that has been through the media ringer lately. The kids at Landon get to routinely hear other kids driving by Wilson Lane yelling homophobic slurs at them. That is bad enough. It is disappointing to see adults doing essentially the same thing on this forum. There are kids there winning national caliber painting awards, national merit scholarships, going to great colleges, doing community service projects, winning regional music competitions, and couple of kids in every class joining the Service after college. I readily admit the GH case is unique to Landon, but I am surprised The University of Virginia isn't held more responsible for GH than his high school. What about Mater Dei, the middle school where he was ostensibly formed? Or maybe his pre-school? Regarding the SAT cheating scandal, there were a handful of Landon kids taking the test there. There were also kids from private and public schools from all over the Metro D.C. area taking the test at Holton Arms. All their scores were thrown out. Might there have been a lot more cheaters than just the Landon kids? Were there other students with irregularities that were not investigated? Were there other schools in the Metro area with SAT cheaters who simply elected to brush the whole thing under the rug and thereby avoid basking in that negative media glow? I would bet my house on it. Regarding this current mess, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. |
Also very funny -- "in due course" is my fave. |
Do You know you sound like a lunatic? Literally, and not figuratively? |

Not all test scores were thrown out. The boys who cheated on the test were in the library, but students in some of the other rooms were not affected. The folks that adminsiter the SAT did a thorough investigation of all the irregularities that day, including interviews with students, and may have found some proctoring irregularities that caused test scores in some rooms to be canceled, but not all test scores were canceled. One of the complicating factors was that this test was given at the height of the sniper event in the fall of 2003 and several other SAT sites in the area canceled their testing that day. that may have had an effect on how many proctors showed up at Holton. |
I haven't read through all of the pages of posts, but I have personal experience with the school and it's a disgusting environment. The poster who said the kids are taught that men rule the world and they will also one day has it right. Cheating is tolerated from both the students and faculty. Extremely offensive language and slurs are tolerated and almost encouraged. You should be proud to know that your little men are being brain washed by some very sick people at that school. The moms (and I was around a lot of them) are pitiful, overly-dependent, completely clueless housewives. The dads are disrespectful, disgusting pigs that think they are above the law because of their money and connections. Whichever parent you are - good luck with those kids! |

How would you know this? Does you boy go to the school? Did he attend and transfer out after a year or two? You seem to make some general accusations about the school and its students. Do you care to elaborate? My son goes there and happens to be in the middle school and absolutely loves the balance between athletics and the arts. Do I love all the parents there, NO, but have I met some very nice families in the past two years. |
| PP, I don't find 20:38's accusations to be so general. That poster has an opinion (which I share as a former Landon family--for several years) and the poster doesn't have to prove statement by statement. Good your family likes Landon--it's very important to be pleased with the school your children attend. Varying opinions are ok, aren't they?? |
| There are too many incidents at Landon to ignore. Something is within the culture there that breeds bad behavior. |
I know this through employment. The area was such that I had access to many students and their families from middle school through high school. Like pp said, you need to be happy with your choice of school and if you are then no need to worry. I am only stating my direct observations and interactions with many families and students. There is a very specific culture at that school that you may not be aware of or haven't been introduced to yet, but I can assure you that your son will become aware of it as he progresses through the grades. I directly observed serious cheating at the student level and even at the faculty level (credentials). To me the toleration of such mass and blatant behavior is inexcusable. The chauvinistic environment is also not only tolerated but encouraged. |
Don't sit with your back to the door. Or someone just might go all Itchy and Scratchy on you. |

20:38 so nice to hide behind a cloak of anonymity. Amazing to think you say that about a bunch of people you don't know. Why can't you be more specific about your accusations and maybe identify yourself?
Here are some facts. Landon had four of their 77 seniors qualify for Presidential Scholar Consideration. In the past ten years Landon has had the male Presidential Scholar from the State of Maryland three times. That means someone from the Dept. of Ed recognized a Landon Student as the best male student in the State of Maryland three times. Two boys won Navy ROTC Scholarships to pay their tuition at MIT and UVA. One boy, who happens to be multiracial and who happens to be the student council president, won a regional award for solo singing at a Competition in NYC. The Music Program is the best in the Region. Landon won the Founder's Cup- indicating it had the best overall athletic program of the IAC-Georgetown Prep, Bullis, St. Albans, St. Stephens St. Agnes, and Episcopal Academy. A senior who will attend Princeton played on their State Championship Hockey Team and has art hanging in Congress as the winner of two National Art Competitions. One Boy was a Parade All-American in Basketball. One Boy was a Lacrosse All-American. One Boy was an Academic Lacrosse All-American. Two Boys will play in the Under Armor All American Game. The College list is not too bad. I may have missed a boy or two unintentionally. Sorry. I don't know the exact college list of other classes, but I think this one is about average. 4 kids to U Colorado 4 Kids to Trinity College CT. 3 Kids to UMD 3 Kids to DAvidson 3 to UVA 2 to Tulane 2 to Princeton 2 to Bucknell 2 to Johns Hopkins 2 to Richmond 2 to Cornell 2 to Duke 2 to Wake Forrest Yale Pitzer Claremont McKenna Hampden-Sydney College of Charleston Bentley University Colgate George Washington U. Washington U. U Penn. Penn State. Ohio State Tufts Middlebury Moorehouse Wisconsin Brown Hillsdale College Stetson U. Coastal Carolina UNLV MIT Rice VA Tech Georgetown Carnegie Mellon Lehigh Every school is not for everyone, but Landon is a very good school for boys. If you are posting on this thread because you or your son had a bad experience, I hope you have moved on or your son has found a better place for him. |
| In all fairness shouldn't the moderator be required to provide full disclosure as well, particularly if this name shows up on a list of Landon donors? |
