Private & Independent Schools

Hardly. And no, the interview question took us all by surprise and I only learned about it afterwards. You haters should really get a life. Landon has flaws -- every school, private and public does. My only point about the interview question was how Landon is stereotyped far and wide -- the University was more impressed with the lacrosse angle than the music. The music took way more work and represented a far bigger achievement.
Landon has suffered unfairly in the press. Not because the things reported are lies (excepting Tim Harrison) but because other schools have not had similar scrutiny. Less competitive folks love to slam the jock angle because it makes them feel better about themselves. Any further doubt about the school? Don't just check out where the grads go to college but where they are employed. The competitive nature of the school is great training for success in business. And not the non-profit kind. |
| And how do you access the Landon grads employment data? That will be a sight that must be seen!! |
No doubt in reference to "for profit" blue and white collar crime! |
| 15:34 unnecessary. Let the posters like 15:17 who think they are helping Landon continue to write their train wreck posts . |
She may or may not be but this is true for many boys at Landon, mine included. There are so many boys in my son's grade who are extremely talented in so many areas. It is tough to be outstanding because there is so much academic, athletic and artistic talent. As for the teacher who keeps insisting that most of the mother's tolerate poor behavior to women. Many of the mother's in my sons's grade are talented businesswoman, doctor's, lawyer's military, teacher's, administrator's just to name a few professions that I have seen. These woman wouldn't and don't tolerate the behavior that you describe. As for the cheating, there have been a number of boys expelled from the school for cheating in the past two years and that included a senior. You sound very bitter, perhaps a teacher who was dismissed for inappropriate behavior? |
| Amen. |
Holy random and totally inappropriate accusation, Batman. |
Well Kettle, I am a teacher at Landon. Your charges of chauvinism are based on an opinion, you maintain is correct. I disagree heartily. I will provide some facts. There are strong women in leadership roles throughout Landon's divisions. I am providing some of their degrees just to emphasize these women are motivated, intelligent, and successful women who have no reason to stay in an institution you claim is inherently chauvinist. In the Lower School half the teachers are women with degrees from UVA, Georgetown U, Brown, Pitt-OSU-Trinity, Parsons, GW-Catholic, UMD-Hopkins. The middle school Assistant Head is a woman with a BA, and MLS, and a JD. The Middle School Head is a former administrator at an all girls school, and therefore absolutely intolerant of chauvinism. The seventh grade dean is a Williams College educated woman who also played basketball there. The Middle School Counselor is a woman with a BA from Michigan, a JD and Ph.D from GW and U MD. There is a woman in the middle school who teaches history and Spanish with a BA from Hollins University and a BS from Columbia. Another woman in the middle school with a BA from The University of Rennes and a MA from Rochester teaches French. A woman in the Middle School English Department has a BA from Yale and a MA from Middlebury. The science Dept. chair is a woman with a BA and MA from Duke University. In the upper school, where you seem to be leveling your charges of chauvinism with the most vigor, strong women occupy the following leadership positions. The Dean of the 9th and 10th grades is a woman with a PH.D in medicine who teaches chemistry. Two of the four college counselors are women with more degrees than I care to recount here. A Hamilton college woman in the Math Dept. is a coach of the Hockey team and golf team. A Harvard educated woman in the Middle School who is a teacher of Chinese is also the head coach of the Rugby team. A woman was formerly the head of the English Department and now runs the school newspaper. A woman educated at Oakwood College teaches Biology and coaches track and another woman educated at Williams College and Carnegie Mellon teaches chemistry and chaired the gender equity committee. Another woman educated at Michigan and DePaul teaches Biology. There are two women who teach Spanish and another woman is the school registrar. Another woman, a native of China with degrees from Hebei Teachers University and American U teaches Chinese and some of her Landon students have gained admission to The U. of Beijing- The Harvard of China. This is certainly not a comprehensive list of the women teaching and working at Landon, but these are all strong, successful women (women I would love my daughter to be like) who have earned degrees and advanced degrees, and distinguished themselves in life. Yet you demean them by saying they do any of the following: encourage chauvinism, tolerate chauvinism, teach chauvinism. I would be remiss if I didn't mention men like myself who take offense at your charges of chauvinism. If there are boys that come to Landon with chauvinistic attitudes inculcated in them by their unenlightened parents or the larger culture, we do our best to educate them. I am sure you are aware we live in a culture permeated by chauvinism, racism, and homophobia. Every school, including Landon, has students affected by the larger culture, and it is our job as educators to challenge the dehumanizing aspects of the larger culture at every turn. I don't expect to change your mind, but I hope these facts will at least give readers of this forum pause when they consider your remarks. The unfortunate aspect of humanity is many people assert their own humanity and deny others theirs. Certainly a chauvinist, a racist, or a homophobe denies the humanity of human beings unlike themselves. It seems to me you are denying the humanity of 670 mothers, fathers, sons, brothers and sisters and 100 some odd faculty and staff with the accusations you have repeatedly made. Most people know two wrongs don't make a right. I am sure you know that as well. If there is a problem, it doesn't get solved by making unsubstantiated accusations. It gets solved by dialogue and understanding between people of good will. You also leveled a serious charge about cheating, and it is flatly preposterous that cheating is encouraged and tolerated at Landon. Flatly preposterous! Cheating occurs at Landon as it does at every school, but I am confident there is less cheating at Landon than many other schools. In my time at Landon when I have come across cheating, the boy has been sent to the honor council. I know for a fact, students caught cheating once are disciplined -usually suspended for a period- and expelled if they persist in cheating. No argument can be made otherwise. If you did indeed work at Landon, saw cheating, and didn't report it, you failed to live up to your professional obligations. |
Because PP's prior accusations of Landon were totally appropriate?? Clearly you have come in on the tail end of the conversation. Sounds to me like an former employee with an axe to grind. It's easy to come here an spew venomous crap, in fact, there are people being paid to do so. Why this thread was not locked the moment that was discovered is beyond me. |
| Back to original topic of this thread. What's going on with the lawsuit? I haven't read or heard anything about it. I hope the powers that be do the right thing. |
These students exceptionally capable, and are being highly trained and will undoubtedly be exceedingly successful in committing assaults, discriminating as employers, and objectifying and mistreating girls in college. Another excellent crop.
|
| Again, I ask you, what is happening with the lawsuit? Is Landon undergoing any changes for the better? There may be a few bad apple boys but please stop slandering the vast majority of boys and young men that are decent, admirable human beings. |

I am a boy that attends Landon.
Although i may not be the most popular of sorts, I percieve that i am at least respected. These fellow brothers i have met recently are truely remarkable people, and dont take all this faux media as the truth. To all of you who choose to assimilate a negetive stereotype to the Landon School; I realize that you are either angered or jealous. (It is ostensible, dont try to conceal it) Angered, because these things should not be happeneing anywhere, not to mention Landon, but the world we live in is not a utopian society. Accept the inconvienient truth that no one is perfect, nor is a school or a society. Jealous, because the elite, white dominant, intelligent atheletes are succeeding in life while you all either complaining about or criticizing Landon in front of a computer screen. What a harsh life you must live. I think your anger towards discrimination and "lack of respect" towards women is in good faith, but you are taking it out on the wrong target. (Ps. Im an ethnic minority.) |
Interesting. Possibly a fake post? It is so poorly written that it strikes me that it could be an attempt to make Landon look bad by having the author claim to be a Landon student. |
| People overall seem to have a hard time with the priviliged acheivers at Landon and the ego that goes with it. Does not go away over time...just gets bigger and bigger. |
