"So much worse happens," he said. "Kids actually get bullied and actually go through stuff much worse than this. I understand why people feel the need to punish me. Bad stuff happens and they need to set an example, but it's unfortunate this has to be the case where this happens."

Wow. No remorse from this kid. I hope he gets deported.

You've quoted selectively. He did apologize. It is unfortunate that this is the test case.

Someone has to be first or else this stuff would keep happening without much repercussion. Hopefully this will send a clear message to others to stop this shit right now.

I guess I see it differently. Punishment, yes. 10 years for a hate crime, no.

10 years is ridiculous. kid should be suspended from school for a semester, that is about it.

The victime wrote a suicide letter that wasn't allowed into evidence.

Ravi sent a text apologizing to roommate soon after (before kid jumped) and that wasn't allowed into evidence.

The incident was not a direct cause of the kid's suicide. The kid came out to his parents prior to going to school and they freaked and were completely unsupportive. He was already emotionally fragile.

Ravi was made a cause for the anit-hate crime bully movement---but he should not have been. Stupid college prank, bad judgement but not worthy of what he got.

No mercy for a criminal who couldn't do the same for his victim.

And by the way, why are advocates of gay marriage "scared straight" to put it on the ballot? Perhaps they know that the majority of Americans don't suport it.

Civil rights for a minority should never be put on a ballot. It should not be up to a majority to decide the civil rights of a minority. That's how Jim Crowism came about. That's why interracial marriage bans were allowed. That's why Asians were not allowed to vote, own property or defend themselves in court until the mid 1900's. Minority civil rights should be granted by the government because they will not become accepted by the majority until they are actually in practice and the majority becomes acclimated enough that they no longer deem it to be "unnatural" which always seems to be the case when the majority denies civil rights to a minority.

He's probably only sorry he got caught and punished. Typical criminal.

I would have been livid if someone had had the audacity to have sex in the dorm he/she was sharing with me
And if the webcam technology had been around, I would have also organized a 'viewing'

If you honestly don't know the difference between the New Yorker and the New York Times, you cannot possibly have an opinion about truth in journalism. Have you even read the article you are questioning? Which sources, or assertions, do you take issue with? Or are you just someone who says things to be difficult when you have literally not a clue what you are talking about?

You obviously didn't go to college in the U.S. Dorm sex is a fact of college life, just like cheap beer and lecture halls. If you don't like it, you can express displeasure to your roommate and work out a solution, or report him, or do one of a million other reasonable things, but NOTHING gives you the right to treat someone like Tyler treated Ravi from the moment he met him, up to and including the webcam thing. Shame on your ignorant self for saying so. I hope you give you are not teaching your kids that this type of behavior is OK.

Have I committed a hate crime when I express my view?
No, you're just a bigot. I am uncomfortable with this move towards making select crimes "hate" crimes. But that doesn't make you any less of a bigot.

If your religion teaches hate, I think that's heartbreaking. And I don't think it's anywhere close to what Jesus would have done (if that's the "religion" to which you are attributing your attitude.)

Read the New Yorker article again. Ravi does not deserve 10 years. It is a society lynching.

If he gets 10 years, the Florida guy who shot Trayvon should be put away for more than one life.

Ravi should just be deported and not permitted to ever set foot in this country ever again. What he did is illegal. It isn't a lynching. You should probably research this term before you use it. Ravi used technology in an illegal manner and broke the law since he isn't a citizen, he should be deported ASAP.

Yes, it is. If he was white, he would have got away with it. Do not tell me the justice system is fair. Look no further than Lori Drew.

I disagree. If he had been a white young man from say Poland or Italy, non citizen, he would be in the same boat.
