B Student “Sweet Spot” Well Regarded Colleges and Universities

The B students from an elite private with decent rigor can get into schools like bates, brandies, and holy cross. b student with minimal rigor would be looking at Denison, Fairfield, Dickinson, American, Elon etc.

We had a few students this year get into Tulane ED and Northeastern ED with several B’s on their transcripts (but their GPAs were in the 3.5-3.6 range). Our counselors generally advise that one or two A- grades will sometimes fly for Chicago ED, but to not to even bother for Chicago RD without a 4.0.

Oh bullshit

Why? Not PP, but this is the case at our school too.

3.0 students are not getting into Tulane, let alone UChicago.

Thus the call for OP to actually specify what GPA they are referring to.

My 3.4 student got accepted to Tulane. He's a boy, I think that helped.

A B student is not getting into VT. How long ago was this?

He’ll be starting there this fall. He also had really strong community service so maybe that helped.

My 3.3 student will be as well. OOS.

Agree. And Lincoln is the state capital with a population of almost 300,000, so internships are possible there. Even more in Omaha, about an hour away.

I don’t know all these schools but Fairfield was under 21% admit this year and Elon reported admission averages of over 4.0 GPA this year. I know a lot of this is due to push for more applications but may not be as easy as 5 years ago.

Full-pay boy is practically a hook at a lot of schools.

Sadly (I say this with no shade - proud Elon alum here!) I think the story with Elon is mixed, higher caliber of applicant but smaller enrollment this past year. Hoping they right the ship!

Fairfield is TOUGH right now. I think the acceptance rate was around 60% even just a few years ago.

You have to say what gpa in what school system, and nothing from more than 5 years ago counts.

My DC class of 26, 3.5w in FCPS, 8 APs, test optional:

Accepted: JMU, Indiana (not Kelly), UMW, Loyola MD, College of Charleston, Michigan State, Xavier, Syracuse (not Newhouse)

Waitlist or Branch campus: Pitt, Penn state, Delaware, Tennessee

Rejected: Fordham, South Carolina, Virginia Tech

My child who is a 4.6 weighted student got into Dickinson with 50k merit scholarship; with that said, I don't know any low B students with minimal rigor applying there, most are higher stats and used to a more rigorous high school academic load. My child didn't end up choosing it, chose a school actually less rigorous, more expensive, in a highly selective program within the school.

Jesus Christ. Why is Fairfield suddenly so popular? Is it because you can live on the beach as a senior (even though beaches in Connecticut are barely usable during the school year)?

My private school student with a 3.45 was waitlisted at Dickinson this year. We were surprised given some other acceptances at more competitive, higher ranked liberal arts colleges. I guess you never know, but Dickinson is not a sure thing for a B student. It’s a lovely school and has a lot to offer!
