False reports used to sow fear and flex an image of power:
After killing of top drug lord, cartels use fake news to spread fear in Mexico ”MONTERREY, Mexico, Feb 24 (Reuters) - After Mexican forces killed the country's most wanted cartel leader on Sunday, false accounts of spectacular violence swept across social media, fueled by what researchers say was a coordinated propaganda campaign by organized crime. Unrest did indeed break out in many parts of Mexico as loyalists to El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, set up roadblocks, torched buses and stores, and attacked gas stations in retaliation for his slaying. But online, things looked even worse. Among the false reports: The Guadalajara airport taken over by assassins. A plane on the runway was on fire. Smoke was billowing from a church and multiple buildings in the city of Puerto Vallarta, popular with tourists. These images, which were reviewed by Reuters, were false but shared tens of thousands of times. Misinformation routinely proliferates after major news events, particularly since the advent of artificial intelligence.” … https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/after-killing-top-drug-lord-cartels-use-fake-news-spread-fear-mexico-2026-02-24/ |
| Can’t believe anyone would compare a vacation in FL to one in Mexico. Mexico is a beautiful country with a rich culture and interesting archeological destinations. When not in the middle of a drug war , a vacation to Mexico >>>> Florida. |
| My parents spend 5-8 weeks in Mexico every winter. They're there now. They're fine. Everyone is not desperately hiding for their lives. |
These are not the only choices. St. John, Grand Cayman, Puerto Rico, Aruba, all better options. |
Being better than Florida isn’t really a flex tho. |
For uncultured louts, perhaps. |
I’m sorry your trip is ruined. |
| This stuff never happens in St. Barts. |
Lol |
Sometimes, we just need to loaf. I don’t need to be enlightened everywhere I go. |
| A weird thing is happening in my stupid Facebook algorithm. All of a sudden I am seeing posts from Jesus-loving, homeschooling moms in MLMs who are either stuck in Mexico or had to cancel their trip there. Apparently the trips are “reward” trips linked to their MLM (I bet they’ve spent a lot more out of their own pockets than the trio actually costs). I don’t usually see MLM stuff and am kind of creeped out as to why I am seeing so much it now. I feel bad for anyone stuck there or who had to cancel a trip, but I don’t need to see these creepy moms referencing how it’s all in God’s hands blahblahblah |
