UMD has one guaranteed transfer program called MTAP. All Maryland CC's participate, but there is an application required (on top of the transfer application to the school itself).

My kid was not and she is at Virginia Tech and a lot of Maryland people there. Also my other kid went to University of Delaware and a lot of Maryland kids are there. Has bus from campus to Dulles Airport, Arlington and Union Station from campus which is great.

UDELL gives decent merit aid and is only around 101 miles from Bethesda/Rockville so it is far enough for separation. It also has a Amtrak stop on edge of campus going to Union Station which is great.

UNC Chapel Hill OOS might not be likely just because UNC OOS is hard even if you make the unofficial UMD cutoff. However, kids are getting into schools with lower acceptance rates while being rejected from UMD. OOS at schools like Wisconsin, William & Mary, UT-Austin, UGA, University of Michigan to name a few among people I know. This doesn’t include those getting into private colleges and smaller LAC with lower acceptance rates and not the MD flagship. So I don’t always take a rejection from UMD to mean that you won’t get into some place harder, especially if it’s in that range where it could go either way at UMD. Other schools have different ways they recalculate GPA and different institutional priorities.

If looking for more of a likely for kids on the line, popular schools are Pitt, Udel, Ohio State, University of Amherst, and Penn State.

This is not true at all! Towson, UMBC, and JMU are not at all “low ranked.”

My son got in but we still think UMD is overrated. But we’re originally from another state, so we got a different perspective!

I don't think there's a human alive who is saying or thinks UMD is in the same league as an ivy, lol! Many sought after schools are not.

UMD is an R1 research university. Any R1 will be good.

Yale is fine but has Amy Chua on the faculty, along with her creepy husband, and they create weirdos like our VP.

Plenty of MAGA elite attended Yale.

Is it possible MAGA aren’t quite as hopelessly stupid as you assume they are?

If kid wants big rah-rah school with classic American college experience, why not just lower your aim a bit & go to one of the many big publics to the west or south?

There are many public universities that offer that experience, & many offer merit aid that will bring net price down to roughly that of U of MD in-state. And the gpa/test scores you need for such aid don’t have to be sky-high.
