I don’t believe Rutgers has rolling admissions. But I agree with the second point: UMD is so overrated in the DMV area! Btw, Rutgers is the safest school on my son’s list. Its application is also super easy with no supplemental essays. UMD has designed its application like an Ivy League’s with those open handed fill-in-the-blank questions. 🙄

Those fill in the blank questions were thoughtful I thought. Literally there's no right or wrong answer. All your kid had to do was think for a few minutes for each question. No big deal. I disagree that UMD is overrated. I just think some people are pissed that their snowflake didn't get in. Remember it's a holistic process so they look at you beyond your grades and test scores.

My son got in but we still think UMD is overrated. But we’re originally from another state, so we got a different perspective!
Don’t get me wrong, I like those open-ended questions just as I like the Yale 35-word questions. But UMD is not in that league. Just saying.

+1
UMD is highly sought after because it is a decent school with a very low price tag, not because of its outstanding academics.

Most people would disagree with your assessment. There's a reason why it is highly sought after.

I don't think there's a human alive who is saying or thinks UMD is in the same league as an ivy, lol! Many sought after schools are not.

Because it's a great school (more than decent) with great programs in business, engineering, CS, criminology, and more; plus its location gives easy access to internships and major top employers. And no, it does not have a low price tag at over $60K per year. To be fair, it's the same OOS cost as Penn State and most other big out of state flagships. Do your research.

You missed my point. I was saying UMD designed their application like an Ivy, which is a little cringey!

Did you have the same issue with the other supplemental essays or questions that other non-Ivy schools asked for? How about Virginia Tech's 4 Ut Prosim essays? How about Purdue or Univ. of Wisconsin? At least Maryland's aren't actual essays; they're literally 2-3 sentence answers. It's cringey that you think that's cringey.

Most parents whose seemingly high-stats kids got rejected by UMD only complain about their admissions criteria, instead of the quality of the school. But those parents whose kids are going to UMD like to exaggerate its quality.

It’s a throw your hat in the ring university, the only sought after part is the Honors College for instate. It has a lower yield than its neighbors in VA and NJ for both instate and OOS. It’s a fine school but lets keep things in perspective.

In past cycles high stats kids have gotten in.

And yet, the number of applicants continues to rise each year. I guess students aren't as put off by their Ivy-like application as you are.

Interesting take. The yield rate for UMD and its comparable schools in VA (Virginia Tech) and NJ (Rutgers) are very similar. It's a great school and I'm sorry you're bugged by that.

He got into Oberlin, but not Maryland.

In Maryland...UMBC, Towson, Montgomery College eventually to UMD

Out of state...Pitt, Wisconsin, Ohio State, other big flagships (some with merit to bring COA closer to UMD)

Wisconsin-Madison actually is considered a higher college than UMD.

Wisconsin is not that much higher.

Even so, if a kid doesn't get into UMD but does get into Wisconsin and attend, the earlier poster is still correctly answering OP’s question.
