Why is Georgia so popular?

It's this. SC is easier to get into. So is Tennessee.

They would choose UGA over SC and Tennessee if they got in.

Yes, but a lot of kids can't get into GA. Many can barely get into SC or TN!

Georgia is a tough admit. Same with Florida. Tennessee is tough too. Need an SAT score for it so that eliminates some. South Carolina was weird at our school. My kid got in but he was one of the few that did. He wasn't a top scholar. I know one of the top kids didn't get in.

This is not true.

Baton Rouge airport is only 15 minutes or so from LSU
Birmingham airport is one hour from Tuscaloosa (Alabama)
Oklahoma City is 20 minutes from Norman (OU)
University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, not far from the airport
Memphis airport is one hour from Oxford (Ole Miss)

Atlanta airport is 1.5 hours from Athens...but getting in and out of Atlanta airport is a pain and the traffic can make it take much longer.

Pretty sure the OP defines major airport different than you do.

My kid is loving SC. Can’t get over how great it is. Challenging coursework in the business school as well.

Yeah, fortunately it doesn’t sound like these electricians and plumbers self-select their social groups at all.

Athens is cute, but it's still in a red state so not on the list.

They have 2 Democratic senators.

And fully Republican state government that hates women and democracy.

BS. The Ga gov and Lt gov stood up to Trump in 2020 as much as anyone. I grew up in Atlanta and it’s fantastic. And Athens is a great town and UGA a great school that improved significantly over past 39 years in part bc of HOPE scholarship.

So tired of the anti-red state hatred on this board - esp since GA is a purple state with an African American and Jewish senator. and if Democrats can’t figure out how to speak to GA they (or we) will be a permanent minority of epic proportions.

Athens is great. UGA is great.

Athens is a great town. Georgia still sucks.

It is obvious that you have never spent much time in Atlanta or in Savannah; both are wonderful cities.

It’s not popular. Next question.

My center-left kid is going to college in GA and has already changed their voting to GA...so that's one vote for Democrats in the 2026 elections.

You can't change things by screaming from the sidelines.

Ridiculous to lay that responsibility on your kid. It took generations of ignorant voters to get the current policies in GA.

Nobody is laying any responsibility...just making the point that UGA/Athens, Savannah and Atlanta are fairly liberal, and the more you add to the ranks, the more ability to make some change happen. It isn't their mission in life, but a nice little way to try to make a difference.

Savannah is not that liberal.

???

Savannah is LGBTI friendly like Atlanta

Electricians and plumbers can't be liberals? That's weird.

Please repeat after me:

American by birth, Southern by the Grace of God; Southern by birth, Georgian by the Grace of God. Amen.

Best day for us was when Trump swamped the Dems and the teachers’ faces said it all. Loads of moderate and conservative families are sending kids to UGA, SEC , Vandy and Duke. Tough to beat great weather, improving academic reputations, strong social life, sports and attractive kids.

“attractive kids”

Our college counselor suggested it our 1550 / 3.99 kid who wants a “big sports” experience.

She said the GA honors program is excellent. Same with South Carolina. School-within-a-school experience with the fun, big sports atmosphere.

Neither are first choice for our kid, but we absolutely see the appeal.

Also, for the W schools, UMCP is increasingly selective. They don’t want to fill half their class with Potomac kids, so many good ones are turned away. 😔

There was a link to an article on a recent post here that talked about the great “state swap” re public schools. Kids who can afford it are looking at other states’ schools, for a host of reasons.

UGA is a good school for average students.

That's about it.

Have you ever heard of the word oxymoron ? If yes, then just delete the "oxy" and, voila, there you are !
