With that 3.9 GPA, these schools are safties. Aim higher.

In state, which is easier, almost all Michigan admits have a 3.8 or above.

3.9 is very average.

A boy interested in Classics might be appealing.

Look at the Residential College and Honors College to determine a fit.

They don't include private schools' gpa in the stats. Private schools do not provide ranking or gpa.
The average gpa for Michigan admits is not meaningful for private school kids.

Michigan recalculates gpa and drops plus and minus. DC will have a 4.0 then.

No!! If a rigorous private school, these are not the schools!
Private and public high schools are DIFFERENT. It's absolutely not apples to apples.

There was other better advice earlier in this thread.

Then it's better to consult a private school's counselor, not here.

Tell me you’re an ordinary public school parent without telling me

This is just categorically wrong.
My private school kid got into Michigan OOS TO with a 3.85 from private.

Op - please don’t listen to these idiots who don’t know at all what they are talking about. They live in their own public school bubble and don’t realize the world beyond it. Private school kids (full pay) do very well at Michigan, especially this year more than ever.

The key is to show meaningful interest and submitting an application early (a few weeks before deadline). I’ve posted my observations in other posts.

They don’t want to be the backup.

Yes we are here!!

There’s some great threads with advice for humanities students from private schools that I used in my time last year. Do you want me to see if I can find it and bump it up?

Peruse through some of these. Some of the topics are good ones, and I'm sure you can create a similar thread for your kid.
If you want to bump something with a question, I'm sure some of us will answer:

Don't think ED at Bowdoin would help.

Is that more about being full pay than anything else?
