Getting shut out of selective/competitive private schools

Anonymous
DS with 3.82 (high rigor); 33 ACT and non-Stem /business /Econ major (true humanities major) with strong pointy related ECs.
Private selective non-DMV high school.

He’s finished with his RD apps.
Deferred from both NU (ED) and Tulane (EA).

He’s got a bunch of decisions from large flagships coming in next month. Concerned he falls into that middle space and may get dinged everywhere else.

Thoughts on chances for these reaches:

Colgate
Bucknell
Middlebury
Wesleyan
Williams
Wake
Emory
Vanderbilt
Wash U
Rice
Brown

Thoughts on chancing him?

Can he apply ED2?

He could easily get shut out of that whole list. It's pretty reachy.

Or he could get into a bunch. What does his college counselor say?

If he wants those kinds of schools, why isn't he looking at targets and safeties that are similar? Why those schools and then big state flagships?
Anonymous
I would think he would get into Colgate and bucknell. He should have some true safeties.

Chance at Bucknell, the rest are no.

I'd highly recommend ED2 at Wake or Wesleyan.

Is that GPA unweighted?

Based on what I saw in the last 3 senior classes @ my DCs’ independent: Williams, Vanderbilt, Rice and Brown would be hard no. The rest might happen but longshots.

Friends’ daughter was dinged @ a T10, then deferred EA @ Tulane, so made a hard pivot to Emory/Wake/WashU for ED2 and admitted.

But who really knows. Know a top stats kid rejected @ a T12 in ED1, then rejected at a T20 LAC in ED2, and accepted to an HYP in RD.

GL to your DC.

Hate to say it but this part might hurt too. He is competing with is classmates. Hope he has some safeties he is happy with.

Ok but were there any AP classes, honors, outside college level courses taken? How does he compare to his classmates in the same school? Rank ?

That list is very reachy and the ones that are less so are very heavy ED schools and take so few RD (eg Middlebury) Can he do an ED2 at Emory or Middlebury or Washu Or does Tulane have that? Bucknell is only one I see any chance at for RD. Honestly it looks like a list that would make sense for a kid like that 15 years ago but not at all today. If he won’t do ED2 and doesn’t want to end up at big state school then add some easier SLACs - maybe Kenyon or vassar or conn college (where it helps to be male)

He needs to pick one off his List that has ED2 - which there are many or hope bucknell comes through.
