Swim coaches at SR, HA, and NCS/St A’s involved in lifeguarding scandal

News flash - all lifeguard jobs at country clubs are jokes. I was a guard at a local Bethesda CC growing up and we all took the lifeguarding test as a group. Do you honestly think a bunch of 16yrs care about that? They take the job because they get to hang out with friends and get a tan. If an actual emergency happens, regardless of training, I’m pretty sure a hungover 17yr old is the last person I want helping my child..

Get a life people. Stop being so detached from
Reality.

It’s a joke high school job. No one takes it seriously. Keep an eye on your own kids. The high school lifeguards are not your babysitters. If you want a legit lifeguard, go to a pool that outsources it from Eastern Europe. They actually take it seriously. Congressional is a good example.

Of course you don’t leave young children unattended at a pool. The lifeguards are there to enforce safety and I have seen guards go in on two occasions so it does happen.

Have the schools announced consequences for the coaches?
What is the delay? This story made it into the Post and shows poor judgment by everyone involved.

This has not been our experience. The lifeguards we know take it VERY seriously and the manager will remove any who do not.

Someone on this thread sure seems hellbent on burying this story.

Yes! Why is that?

Why isn't the Montgomery County DA prosecuting the coaches for fraud? Is there some kind of exception to fraud laws for private school coaches?
Anonymous
Not a lawyer but for a civil fraud case wouldn't one of the families need to come forward and sue? The publicity, social consequences, shame, time and cost of doing that may not be worth it to any of them.

Probably more investigation needed to determine if this is a criminal fraud case. Probably more pressing matters to investigate. That doesn't excuse what they did.

The schools should act but no indication that they plan to do anything.

The class was done at Kenwood by a Stoneridge coach- but not the middle school or high school swim coach. MB is an athletics teacher, not the swimmer coach just FYI. She coaches at Kenwood.

The re-certification was completed- and *accepted*- by the Red Cross and done by a Holton administrator

as for Bettencourt, don't know what his involvement was really

all the kids who wanted to get rectified were given the option

the kids who wanted to be paid back can talk to Kenwood

Move on, people.

Except the students weren’t there for recertification they were there for certification. They didn’t have any prior training. This is evidenced by the cost. $400 is a lot of money even for the certification class and is obscene for the recertification class which tend to run $75-$150.

Regardless of her tenure and past success the Red Cross just PERMANENTLY REVOKED this woman’s instructional certification. If they are the school we think they are this censure from Red Cross shows that at this time she cannot responsibly lead a swim program.

This goes for the others involved as well. The schools need to fire or demote these coaches to protect the students and the reputation of the schools.

Stone Ridge has three alums swimming in the Olympics this month, the only high school in the world that can say that. I don’t think they’re worried about the reputation of their school or swim program based on this anonymous message board, this whole story seems blown up by a few people who want their $400 back.

You are vermin. Truly vermin. Bet you’re guilty too.

🤦‍♀️ Based on an anonymous message board or based on a Washington Post story that quoted two of the coaches acknowledging what they did?

When would it matter to you, coach? When someone drowns because of one of your poorly trained "lifeguards"?
