What neighborhood is this?

U St. corridor

The Marshalls were sitting in a vehicle that almost certainly belongs to the US government (not Sotomayor) when a person approached the vehicle and pointed a gun at them through the window. We don't know if words were exchanged. At some point the Marshalls fired on him. He lived.

He wasn't trying to steal Sotomayor's car and they didn't shoot him to protect her. They shot him because he *was threatening them with a gun.* They shot him before he could shoot them. They were not going to give up the vehicle to him (and they aren't required to omg) and he was absolutely engaged in threatening behavior that justified the use of force.

What other outcome can you imagine that makes sense? Two armed federal Marshalls allow themselves to be shot by a carjacker while keeping guns holstered? They step out of the vehicle and let this idiot take it? Does either of those scenarios make any sense?

But this is DCUM, clearly law enforcement officials treated a fine upstanding young man whose brain is not fully developed harshly.

They were sitting in a car not using it for transportation. He just needed it to pick up some medication for his sick Grandma. Would have brought it right back.

What in the heck are you speaking of. What else would a Supreme Court justices security have? Super soakers?

Yes why does she need armed security?

Unlike most of the pearl clutching biddies who post here, she's not afraid of living in an urban neighborhood.

She cleatly IS afraid, or she wouldn't have 2 armed men protecting her and her residence.

Troll. She's a Supreme Court Justice for crying out loud. Of course she has a security detail.

And she has one due to fear.

Well then they are all afraid.

Yes, they are. Otherwise, no need for armed federal marshalls, which I'm glad were there.

Because she undoubtedly gets death threats regularly? Because her work involves very high profile file decisions likely to anger people, some of whom are definitely unstable enough to try to do her harm? Because ensuring the safety of high ranking government officials also provide videos a guard against government disruption? Why is this even a question?

Why does the president have armed security? I mean what even is this question.

Sotomayor is only tangentially related to this story anyway-- there is virtually no chance the carjacker has any idea those guys were engaged in protection if a supreme court justice when he did this. He's just a stupid criminal who made an extra stupid choice. They could have been on their way back to the office or protecting someone else or engaged in other official business unrelated to Sotomayor. She was not present when it happened.

The only people saying otherwise are trolls trying to poke fun at progressive takes on criminal justice policy. No one actually thinks the Marshals did anything wrong.

I am pretty certain that ALL Justices have security by US Marshals. Remember the guy who flew across country to assassinate Kavanaugh? After that, all Justices have security. As they should. There are still mobs of people protesting at the homes of some of the Justices.

Since this is a federal crime, we can hope that this sorry jackass will do some hard time.

So. Last I checked violence affects all of us.
750 armed carjackings? To hell with the rest of us poors, may the odds be in favor of our lives.

The Marshals weren't protecting her from anything, they were protecting their own property. These carjackers were idiots who saw a guy in a car and figured they could force him out and steal it, likely because they've done it many times before, and one got shot because sometimes karma is quick. Hopefully with federal involvement they'll actually track down the others.

Agree. Security was randomly targeted for an attack like any of us could have been except she gets the privilege of armed security because she’s above the rest of us. We have to accept fate

I guess no one remembers but Justice Souter was mugged while jogging 20 years ago. I think he gave up his wallet but they punched him. Since then the justices have Marshall protection pretty much all the time.

I was mugged while jogging 5 years ago.

Yes. The should have let the guys go. They could’ve retrieved the car after they totaled it like everyone else does

That was going to be the case until Sotomayor's bodyguard started shooting around.

Should we all be doing the same? Can I get a gun tomorrow to protect my car and family?

The interesting thing here is that Sotomayor was not targeted in any way because of who she was, other than being a car owner.

Why did the Marshall intervene, and in such a violent way?

I promise you, if this had been Kavanaugh's detail, we'd be hearing how wrong it was that the Marshall shot the kid.

Deeply racist and fascist no doubt.
