Maybe there’s a vast conspiracy like that or maybe the pool has a racist element. Latter sounds more plausible than the former.

One person posting =/= vast conspiracy. It's just one person posting multiple times.

doubtful. is that pool really in such high demand? also, I'm not this "one person" - I live in VA.

Yes. If you haven’t been able to piece together from this thread that it’s popular, I don’t know what to tell you. There are over 2000 people on the waitlist.

It looks like this pool is the worst of both worlds - racist and crummy. Forest Hollow is much better.

According to the State of Maryland Dept of Assessment and Taxation, the PG Pool was assessed at $1 million in 2022. That's way off... someone should contact the tax authorities next time their up for assessment.

A lot of neighborhoods have been turning over from older residents (who left the community pools long ago) to younger families who are now eager to join. The demand exceeds supply, in some areas more than others. I remember that when we got on the waitlist for our pool, folks told us they got in after 3 years, whereas a decade earlier there was no wait at all. Took us 4 years to get in, now we know families who have been on the waitlist for 4 years and it will likely take 1-2 more years based on their position. They could drive 15 minutes further out and probably get in somewhere else quicker, but obviously part of the appeal is the local community aspect of the pool.

Did your pool explicitly exclude blacks back in the 1970s, then implicitly exclude blacks until the 1990s? Bc that’s what pg pool did to my grand dad.

Every pool ever. What's your solution?

+1 exactly. Just about every private pool that has been around a long time has a racist history. If you don't think organizations can change or don't care that's fine. Don't be a member or get on the waitlist. Do you think they should close just cause of their racist past?

Maybe there should be some reparations to make up for past wrongs.

PG Pool has 3 acres, which is 130,680 sq ft. Land in Mount Rainier easily runs $45/sq ft. PG Pool's land alone should be assessed at $5,880,600.

PG Pool's land was assessed at $651,400 last year! This pool hasn't been paying 89% of value of their land for years!

PG Pool's land is assessed at $651,400.

so...track down the people that were denied entry in decades past, and offer membership to their descendants? Sure why not. They'd have to show they were denied, and have a descendant that wants in.

Please share how you think it’s crummy.

Adjust your assessments going forward and pay what you owe in back taxes for your absurdly low property value.

Agreed Forest Hollow is wonderful! Don’t waste your time worrying about the PG pool, it isn’t worth it. Enjoy what you have.

That pool probably gets a tax bill just like you do. Provide evidence of any home owner in the area asking for a higher bill and I’ll join you in condemning local businesses who don’t do that.

Yes, but maybe some of the citizens in Mount Rainier who are excluded from this pool could just petition the state to give this snobby pool a closer review during the next round of assessments?

People keep saying it’s a private pool and we should be left alone. Fine, but private property must pay their fare share of taxes.

All the PG pool members trashing PG county and Mount Rainier should pay up. Your tax bill seems like it should nearly double.

Buddy. No dog in this race, but I’m following this thread and I just don’t get how this pool is snobby. Anyone can get a membership right? You seem equally eager to assert that the pool is racist and also to join it as quickly as possible.
Anonymous
No dog in this race either, including motivations for PPs. However, if this private entity is under assessed by a lot, they are effectively getting a public subsidy. The only explanations for this subsidy that I’ve seen are “because we can” or making some assumption about people’s motivations for posting.

But are you this invested in the (likely numerous) other properties that are also potentially under assessed? Something tells me no…..
