Whether you like Bonnie Rait or not, the absolutely cluelessness of this columnist is just amazing. Rait is a 30-time nominee and a 13-time winner. Granted she was an underdog since she is well past her prime, but "an unknown blues singer"?

Sounds very similar to this post about Beyoncé… “Beyonce is 41. She was the "it" singer a generation ago. My kids have no idea who she is, but they know all about Harry Styles, TS, Lizzo, etc. I don't understand all the hubbub about her not winning. Who cares? She has 32 grammys and is one of the richest women not just in entertainment but on the planet. She's not getting any younger and I imagine fewer young people will care about her music in years to come. Relevancy is fleeting and tastes change. It's sort of how life works.“ |

I think the Taylor v Beyoncé people are starting to lose sight of the problem with the Grammys. I like both artists; I don’t really listen to either one. But I can appreciate both of them, and I do listen at least once to many albums. I think we even had a discussion on this board once about “perfect albums.” Not the best, but ones that you cannot imagine improving. To Pimp a Butterfly was mentioned iirc. I went and listened to the whole thing twice. Is it my kind of music? No. But I could see why it was so well-regarded. That’s why Beyoncé should have won AOTY for Lemonade. And I actually think Taylor deserved hers for Folklore.
It’s also why I cannot get too worked up about who deserves to win. All the nominees were deserving in some way. But when the votes consistently reward pop music over other forms, it makes the award more and more meaningless. |
And no hip hop artists. |
Lauryn Hill and OutKast aren’t hip hop? |
IMO, maybe there shouldn't even be general awards that span all genres. It really is a situation of trying to compare apples and oranges. How can you hold up a jazz album, a pop album and a rap album and say which is the best album? They are three entirely different things. Voters just pick based on what type of music they like best, and pop generally wins because that has the biggest voter base. Of course, they'll never do that artists want general awards and the grammys enjoy the attention paid to those awards. |
Exactly. Pop is short for popular. |
No classical music or opera albums either. |

I guess we'll never know who got 2nd or 3rd or 4th and so on.
An artist probably doesn't need that great of a percentage to win, just more than the second artist. With ten nominees, there is a higher likelihood that certain genres are represented by multiple artists, increasing the likelihood of splitting the vote. The same thing happens with the Oscars' best film category, which in former years only had five nominees. |
+1 I like Beyoncé and think Lwmonade should have won. Formation was a great song. This current album of hers is terrible and feels plagiarized. |
64th doesn’t mean 11 out of 64 we’re black artist. A few people have won multiple times, including some black artist. |
No dog in this fight but I’d argue sales are not a measure of popularity. The single best measure of popularity is by social media. Beyoncé has 50m more IG followers than TS. TS has about 10m TT followers but I’d say IG is the beat measure if popularity as it spans across more generations. In summary, for popularity, TS pop fans are more likely to also know and follow Beyoncé. The same cannot be said for Beyoncé fans. I’m not saying who is more talented or deserving, just my take on popularity. Yes, Kim Kardashian is more popular that both 😂 |
+1 So good! |

+1 Not to mention, if we are going to give her credit, we also have to give her Producer and Record Executive husband credit and the entire enormous team that works not only on her music, but her appearance. The electric fan that blows her hair, that alone deserves a GD Grammy....... People can like who they like. No one has to like Beyonce. And that is just fine. |
