What are the reasons against building a US-Mexico border wall?

Latin immigrants have American-born children that go on to vote heavily Democratic, even if their parents aren’t able to vote themselves right now. And with some sort of future legislation or EO establishing citizenship for current immigrants they’ll vote reliably Democratic too. My opposition to a border has nothing to do with globalization or the economy, it’s just about beating the R’s. All politics is local, and we have lots of red areas of this country that immigrants can help turn blue. It’s a numbers game. They have more in those places, and we need to change the balance of power.

Border counties full of immigrants when very red this year.

Oh, honey, no. You need to get up to speed because your ignorance is embarrassing.

You are a 🤡. I am 1) Jewish and 2) a lifelong Democrat.

And live in Montgomery county, right?

No, I live in DC proper. Close to the Montgomery County border.

DP.. honest question.

A lot of Jews came here as refugees. Their children were provided education here.

I realize that most of the people crossing the border aren't fleeing extermination camps, but some of them are definitely fleeing drug wars and forced labor for drug gangs.

Some of these people do plan on and want to apply for asylum, just as those Jews did back then.

As a Jew, do you think it was fine for the US to provide public education and services to Jewish refugee children but not those fleeing drug gangs across our borders?

I do not believe that we are required to have open borders in the U.S. in 2022 because Jewish refugees came to the U.S. during the holocaust.

We have gangs here too. And Baltimore alone probably has a higher murder rate than San Salvador.

Nope. San Salvador's murder rate is a lot higher than Baltimore's. And there are many parts of El Salvador worse than that.

Nonsense. El Salvador has strong gun control, unlike Maryland, where any child can buy a gun at the local Walmart.

Nonsense?

In 2019, San Salvador had 35.5 homicides per 100k according to this report: https://www.barrons.com/news/fears-of-extremist-campaign-after-attack-on-us-power-station-01672168208

That's some progress, as compared to over 100 homicides per 100k in 2015 - but it also hinges on a recent, shaky ceasefire with some of the major gangs.

But even with a temporary detente between gangs it's still more than 5 times higher than Baltimore's homicide rate, which has been between 5 and 6 per 100k. And, many places outside of San Salvador are even more dangerous.

So, while you have a valid point about any child being allowed to buy a gun at their local Walmart (along with people with serious mental illness etc) Baltimore is still safer than San Salvador.

You cannot purchase or possess a gun in El Salvador. Period.

Your numbers and statistics are meaningless.

What an idiotic response, given the ACTUAL FACT of continued gun homicides in El Salvador. Saying "gun possession is illegal" doesn't somehow magically make the very real gun homicides magically go away.

You seem to not understand that the Salvadoran government has not had adequate resources to enforce their laws and rein in the gangs, and that the criminal networks which have the ability to smuggle guns are very strong.

No, what’s idiotic is making an apples-to-hammers comparison of homicide rates in the US (where literally anyone, even children, can legally buy a gun) and El Salvador (where no one can legally buy a gun). Because your little trumpian brain seems to think that’s a relevant comparison.

Tell ya what? Establish and (vigorously) enforce the same gun laws that El Salvador has, right here in the US. Then in 10 years we’ll compare numbers again.

What do you think the results will be then?
