Thoughts on the L&D nurse “ick” tiktok

I feel sorry for the nurses having to put up with Pregnant American Princesses and their over entitled families. Nobody should be bringing your young children to the hospital. They can see their new sibling when you get home from the hospital a day or two later.

Most hospitals have rules about not bringing siblings to the hospital, or only during specified times and only if there is a designated adult with them at all times. These rules are even stricter since Covid.

Most women giving birth in hospitals are not entitled princesses. They are looking for medical care. For many people, it is their first and only time staying overnight in a hospital. For first time moms, they may have plenty of perfectly reasonable fears about how it's going to go.

The idea that it's okay to publicly crap all over your patients because sometimes some of them do annoying things is the really entitled behavior. Take it up with your boss, your colleagues, your therapist, your partner, your priest. I don't care. People go to hospitals because they have to, and because they need help. You don't trash them on TikTok because you had a tough day. These nurses need to grow the eff up.

Well there were the posters telling people to get an epidural so they don't disturb the other patients. That's entitled.

Yikes. You sound rather judgmental, which can be pretty trashy PP.

Nurses are often the ones who catch the mistakes doctors make, they are often the best advocate for patients, and they are the ones who determine whether you have a good stay or not. They deal with behavior and horrors we can only imagine and then take a deep breath and do it again and again. They wear out their bodies and their souls. I have been the grateful recipient of wonderful care from a number of nurses and I'm grateful for them every day. Yes, I've had not great care but I've also had a bad mechanic, a bad boss, a bad service worker etc... You are dealing with humans - there's gonna be a variety. Y'all keep slamming nurses and you aren't gonna have any there when you need them. We are already seeing that. Again, yes these tik tok fools were bad but that's not all nurses.

Oh it’s absolutely the same people. I started noticing on other social media first. Initially they came for the teachers. Now it’s nurses. Some of the misogyny in the comments. And classism. The all nurses/teachers are stupid/dumb/lazy without an inkling of what either profession really entails. And you know these fools would break down in either a school or hospital within 15 minutes.

I can’t stand nurses. Not surprised at all by the tik tok story.

I started out very against the tik tok girls but the more I read the more I think "They've probably had enough." Good for them.

The problem with what those nurses did is that it is erodes patients’ trust in their healthcare providers. They’re human, they’re allowed to have feelings; many do gripe about patients to each other. That doesn’t mean that patients want to know that, especially as explicitly and meanly as these nurses did it.

Then you all really, really don't want to know what we say about you family members of the critically ill -- out of earshot.

Their mistake was blabbering in a showy public way.

I know you all have a stressful job, but you have no right to mock and criticize people who are trying their best to navigate a stressful situation, even if their behavior appears inappropriate to you. Find a new line of work.

Actually, we do have that right. Free speech and all.

Ummm... you can have free speech as an unemployed person.

Look, if every nurse or physician was fired for talking bad about patient families then there would be no nurses or physicians left.

Nope. I know some wonderful people in the medical profession who do not talk trash about the people they care for. You just run with a terrible crowd.

Alright, you keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. Just know if you’re in critical care and your family member is acting a fool, the whole floor has heard about it at the break room or nurse’s station.

As long as (1) it doesn’t impact my care, and (2) it doesn’t get back to me, I don’t care.

The most alarming thing from the TikTok to me is the comment about epidurals. That nurse is complaining about patients who are asserting a right to refuse the most invasive form of pain management because doing do makes her job harder. If that’s how you feel, you should not be an L&D nurse (or maybe a nurse at all).

I had an epidural, by the way. Loved it. But it was my choice and if for whatever reason I’d decided against it, I would expect the nurse to roll with it and to be educated in other methods for pain management.

You obviously weren't on a ward with a woman doing natural birth. I had 8 hours of listening to her scream. As a patient, it was the most horrific experience. I have 0 respect for anyone that puts so many people through her pain.

+1

She needs to do that at home. There are women who are laboring to reliever stillborn babies or babies expected to live only hours who aren’t screaming their heads off. Have some consideration for others.

No. We are not doing this.

First off, who are you to determine if a family is acting a fool as you say? If they are 1. dangerous to themselves or others 2. making it difficult for patients to rest 3. physically or verbally assaulting staff or patients or other family members that is unacceptable. Anything else is mouth closed. You can complain about family. Dont utter a word about patients and their conditions/etc outside of medically necessary sharing of info. You are repugnant. Go see a therapist and talk it out.

And who are you to determine how a stressed healthcare worker can blow off steam? Gossiping in the break room is way better (and a lot cheaper) than therapy.
Your superior attitude is repugnant.

I’m a patient with relevant rights under federal law. You, as a health care provider, are responsible for upholding those rights. That’s how a “profession” works.

Awesome. Make sure you refuse all nursing care when you’re in the hospital.

Posting on TikTok was dumb. They got fired.

Lol so doctors and nurses aren't allowed to eye roll about you in the break room. Got it. Because, federal law

NP. Break room is one thing. The internet is another.

I work in healthcare in a non-clinical role and I find these videos appalling. I do understand how overworked nurses are. That is absolutely no excuse. These nurses would be fired from my hospital immediately.

Being stressed is not a license to drop your professional veil.

Here are my icks as a labor and delivery nurse

Husbands playing on their phone while their wife is laboring through painful contractions
Husbands joking about the husband stitch
Husbands complaining about being hungry
MILs (or mothers) bullying their way into the L&D room and husbands not standing up for their wife
Husbands complaining that they’re cold while watching us and his laboring wife sweat our asses off, or in the operating room

And my ickiest ick—husbands who are too interested in what’s going on down their or even visibly aroused

These are good. I support you posting on SM.

How trashy. Hope you're proud.

I'm neither trashy nor proud. A significant minority of all family members of adult ICU patients are pretty awful people. You know who IS proud? Them. They are out and proud with their disrespect, their combativeness, their defiance, their sheer stupidity, their selfishness and so on.

Sounds like you and others would be surprised at how little these "family" members care about intubated, sedated Grandma terminally lying there in the bed. How they eat her food tray (free food!) because she's, you know, intubated. They interrupt the social worker to make sure they'll keep getting Grandma's disability checks that they divert to their own use in another state. They smoke weed in the bathroom. Sometimes they'll smuggle street drugs in FOR the patient.

Do you really think it makes us trashy to commiserate about the above privately in the bathroom? Ok.
