Lindsey Graham to introduce federal abortion ban

But after that, the baby should have the chance. But this is about flushing out the liars and extremists in the pro abortion lobby. 12 is too soon, 20 is too late. 15 is the sweet spot and it’s going to have an impact.

It's brilliant because it lets ignorant people think they're being reasonable while still unreasonably restricting health care for women. 15 weeks is completely arbitrary, except that the people who picked it know it puts the deadline before the full body scan at 20 weeks, which will prevent women from choosing abortions when they get bad news about the health of the fetus at that checkup. It's quite heartless for republicans to choose a random cut off date that has no basis in science, medicine or religion, only in control and cruelty. I really don't understand why someone would say it's acceptable to allow abortions of nonviable fetuses up to 15 weeks, but it's absolutely unacceptable and should be illegal to abort an unviable fetus with medical problems 5 weeks later. No good will come of laws like this.

Regarding late term abortions, this is not gaslighting at all - it's the mainstream position of the Democrats to protect such a right. They even passed it in the House: Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). Go read it, as long as the pregnancy is determined as a risk to the mother's health - a standard which is not defined in the act and is therefore wide open - abortion can be performed at any time.

Please cite a single example of a late term (ie third trimester) abortion that was elective with no mitigating circumstances.

Hint, you can't, it is a red herring established by the Evangelicals as a strawman talking point.

The reality is that when a pregnancy gets to a third term, the mother is thinking about names, prepping a nursury etc, No one carries a fetus to 6 months and then decides, eh, screw it, I didn't want the kid.

????

Then why do you fight so hard for third trimester abortion????

Do you know when the third trimester starts? Take a guess.

Even worse, it allows terminations of viable, healthy fetuses being carried by healthy women at 15 weeks but not by unviable fetuses at 20 weeks. I thought Republicans were against abortions for convenience?

They say that, but the fact remains it is on the table. Which is why all voters need to vote as if this might eventually be passed by the GOP.

No, obviously not. They just want not so smart people who don't realize this to vote for them.

This is a gimmick. Republicans have realized that the majority of Americans are opposed to total abortion bans and the Republicans want to paint themselves as the rational ones here by banning them after 15 weeks- and they will then make outlandish claims that all democrats want people to get abortions on demand up until the moment of delivery.

Very stupid gimmick. It’s hilarious that Republicans are going to rely on people having enough nuance to their understanding.

They must know every. Single. Dem. Advertisement. Will say that republicans want to ban abortion and are actively trying to pass a law right now to do so.

That’s….not a good look.

LOL, oh yes, they’re nothing if they aren’t intellectually consistent!

Really would be so F**king beautiful to watch Lindsey lose the upcoming midterms for the republicans AND still get f’ed on all his own trump-related legal troubles.

Yes— it’s a line at which most people agree there *should not be a ban on abortion*.

Don’t they teach “college educated Republican Women” to read? The WSJ posts were already shared in this thread.

Imagine if, instead, he’d introduced a bill that prevented women from being fired for time off for prenatal care. Imagine if, instead, he’d introduced a bill mandating federal paid leave for mothers. Imagine if, instead, he had introduced legislation ensuring Medicaid covered postpartum women to address our appalling maternal mortality rate.

You know. Imagine if he’d introduced pro-life legislation.

Abortion has never been "unfettered" in the US. Never. Not even for a day.

People seek out abortions after 20 weeks because of fetal anomalies, because of danger to the mother's health. These are tragedies. And Americans are smart enough to know that. There is no pandemic of women 20+ weeks pregnant, or even 15+ weeks pregnant, deciding willy-nilly to end their pregnancy.

The vast majority of abortions happen in the first trimester.

You'd like to force women to go through 40 weeks of carrying a fetus that is going to die upon birth. Or force a woman to carry a doomed fetus until it is about to kill her, rather than letting her terminate at a much safer point for herself and her future fertility. And Americans who care about women aren't any having any of it.

YOU are the extremist here.

It is unfettered in Colorado. Completely legal for any reason until birth. Do your homework

It is decriminalized in NY. Do your homework.

New Jersey, Vermont, Portland. No restrictions. Shall I go on?

I'm male and shocked to read so many posts implying women carry an unwanted pregnancy to third trimester before getting an elective abortion. Where is this folklore even coming from? I've never witnessed a woman's obvious late pregnancy end except in birth or tragedy.

Also, my wife had to have her pregnancy terminated at 18 weeks for health issues. What happened during those last 3 weeks of gestation that would make it illegal if Republicans have their way?
