In the meantime, DHS is concerned about white nationalists returning from the war in Ukraine and bringing nasty tricks they've learned from Azov & Co. home with them. But let's pretend that part is fine too.

"What kind of training are foreign fighters receiving in Ukraine that they can possibly proliferate in US militias and white nationalist groups?"

They can learm those tricks in the U.S. miltary, too. Does that mean we should stop funding national defense?

You’re so right. There is no difference whatsoever between the US army and terror training camps. Somebody tell DHS to stop watching for the ISIS graduates.

Are you saying the Ukraine military are terrorists?

It's not for me to say, is it? "Terrorist" is a label states apply based on their own political needs and rules. It has no set definition. So ask DHS why they are concerned.

The FBI now thinks the Gadsden flag is a terror symbol so basically anything right of center is terror

A anything center right thinks the election was stolen and supported the coup.

💯 also…
Euro homes (even umc homes) don’t have the same insulation american ones do nor are hvac/heat pump widespread.

Yeah I haven’t asked my Gadsden flag what it thinks of 6 January but I’ll go ahead and see what she says.

Yet you have no problem saying there is no difference whatsoever between the US army and terror trainimg camps. And the DHS is concerned about white supremacists receiving trainimg from the U.S. military (except for those DHS agwnts who are white supremacists themselves). So, should we stop funding our national defense?

Europe's energy issues and dependence on Russia for gas is entirely self-inflicted. Anyone with a brain could see this slow motion train wreck from even before Putin send his tanks across the border.

In some ways that’s fair- but what does it mean for the Ukraine conflict?

You missed the point entirely.

I think Volodymyr needs to stay the course. This is no joke. If they don't stop Russia, Russia will try to take the Baltics and more. Anyone who doesn't think so has not been following Russian media. It's one thing for Germans to worry about not having enough heat but it's another thing for them to wake up with Russian tanks on their border.

Do you really think that Europeans wanted to send their kids to Afghanistan when the US came calling under NATO? I imagine many felt the same as you---that was someone else's problem to solve.
You would have been right at home with the 1930s America First ostriches who thought sticking their fingers in their ears would make Hitler go away.

NATO has kept the peace in Europe for roughly 75 years. Putin wants to end his despotic rule by retaking as much former Soviet territory as he can. The Baltics, with their coastline, are a prime target. That's why they wanted to join NATO---they knew they were a target.

Naked aggression needs to be stopped in its tracks. Otherwise it continues. What George Bush did when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait was a masterful demonstration of how to get the global community to respond to that type of behavior. He was right to push the Iraqis back to their border and stop. That is what needs to happen here. It's just trickier because Putin is nuts enough at this stage to try to use a nuclear weapon.

Considering how Afghanistan ended, what European would have willingly sent their son into this war without a purpose and without results?

The Baltics, of all people, should be thanking USSR every day for gifting them vast chunks of land formerly owned by Poland. Without its stint in the USSR, Lithuania would have been a province of Poland.

LOL. Lithuanians I know would have preferred to maintain their historic ties with Poland versus Russia. Of course I dependence from both was/is the ultimate desire. The Polish-Lithuanian(-Ruthenian) Commonwealth was not that long ago relatively speaking. Even Ukrainians like Lithuanians have friendly ties with Poland. Russia remains the common, persistent threat. The Belarusians are another matter.

Ding ding ding.

And it’s not Friedman who sees it - he’s literally being told by the highest levels in the WH they are concerned about this massively .

I don’t think people get just how precarious things are in developed parts in Europe right now.

Yes the food is great and the walkable neighborhoods are awesome and there are less fat people which is a huge bonus but you can feel a huge sense of things are gonna fall off a cliff soon and it is all unsustainable.

European political-economy does not work with energy costs this high. Their entire model breaks.

It’s warm out. No rush.

Do you know Europeans well enough to ask them what percentage of their salary is going to energy? Didn’t think so or you wouldn’t be so damn flippant

How much?

My family spent 900 euros a month for heat last winter just on tension run up- in a country with an avg salary of 1200 euros. This winter heating their home will exceed the average salary. Plus electric plus fuel plus inflation run up.

If something doesn’t give we’ll have a new government lining up with Orban position. Wait for it

Yep.

Orban is gross, and I particularly don’t care for Magyars and other assorted Central European people.

But he’s right on the Russia v USA thing being just another great power completion thing that is based on energy, market access and geostrategic interests and Europeans are caught with their pants down.

Hungarians should be kicked out of eu and the us needs to refocus a core eu around France, west Germany, Spain, Portugal, Benelux, Denmark, Norway, Sweden.

EU27 has fundementally different interests.

Agree about the concerns re: Hungary. Speaking of Magyars — Where do the Fins fit in these days?

PS I know ethnically these two are different, but I think of them bc linguistically their languages have common roots. It’s a personal quirk when someone mentions one of the other to me.

Once Europeans realize how this war was manufactured and prolonged by the WH they are not going to be very happy with the US.

Just watch.

Please explain. How did the US manufacture this? I know we supported Zelensky’s presidential candidacy.
