That is a worry since even Russian official are urging Putin to resign … what does he have left to lose? He lost his mind and scruples years ago …

I am French and we all know that Putin started this mess, through a delirium of grandeur.
American intelligence was key to a correct assessment of the threat, and they had a job to do to persuade certain European nations (France among them), who well remembered their bogus WMD claims in Iraq.
However we have all come together to combat the ridiculousness that is Putin's Russia.
We are happy that American intelligence was right this time, and we'll put more faith in them next time. You don't seem to realize that the USA is coming out of this smelling like roses.

And from a French person, that's HIGH praise

How fast the French forget WWII

What are you trying to say?

That you would not exist were it not for American heros

HA HA HA HA!

And you might not exist as a country were it not for French help in your war of Independence.

General Lafayette is the only foreign portrait in the Capitol.

True. The French helped Americans maintain slavery and murder Native Americans at will.

With the British slavery would have been abolished and we'd have universal healthcare and proper separation of powers.

Ding ding ding.

And it’s not Friedman who sees it - he’s literally being told by the highest levels in the WH they are concerned about this massively .

I don’t think people get just how precarious things are in developed parts in Europe right now.

Yes the food is great and the walkable neighborhoods are awesome and there are less fat people which is a huge bonus but you can feel a huge sense of things are gonna fall off a cliff soon and it is all unsustainable.

European political-economy does not work with energy costs this high. Their entire model breaks.

It’s warm out. No rush.

Do you know Europeans well enough to ask them what percentage of their salary is going to energy? Didn’t think so or you wouldn’t be so damn flippant

How much?

My family spent 900 euros a month for heat last winter just on tension run up- in a country with an avg salary of 1200 euros. This winter heating their home will exceed the average salary. Plus electric plus fuel plus inflation run up.

If something doesn’t give we’ll have a new government lining up with Orban position. Wait for it

Yep.

Orban is gross, and I particularly don’t care for Magyars and other assorted Central European people.

But he’s right on the Russia v USA thing being just another great power completion thing that is based on energy, market access and geostrategic interests and Europeans are caught with their pants down.

Hungarians should be kicked out of eu and the us needs to refocus a core eu around France, west Germany, Spain, Portugal, Benelux, Denmark, Norway, Sweden.

EU27 has fundementally different interests.

Agree about the concerns re: Hungary. Speaking of Magyars — Where do the Fins fit in these days?

The Finns finally joined NATO.

DP. Please tell me you're not an American who is arguing that we'd have been better off never becoming an independent country. WTF.

"With the British slavery would have been abolished..."

Perhaps. But the British are responsible for horrors around the globe in every century. Would America have been a just place had the Crown persevered? Doubt it.

You should read The Two Georges, it's an alternative history novel based on this premise.

MAGA don't know stuff like that.

Why would they? These are the same folks who horse de-wormer and hydroxychloroquine instead of listening to science.

How did this thread get to be about the colonial history of France and England instead of about Zelensky and Ukraine in the 21st century?
Anonymous

French PP supports Ukraine and appreciates America's help>other PP says France should be glad America helped in WW2 so don't be so high and mighty (??)>then PP points out that yes, but America should be glad France helped them win the Revolutionary War> poster then says we'd be better off if France had not helped and we had remained under British rule because of health insurance and balance of power (?)

Who knows what we would have under British rule, but history of their rule in other places did not go so well.

I hope they keep going and the war finally ends. I was the one who predicted a long drawn out conflict but maybe I was wrong?
Paradoxically it’s better for the ordinary Russians too if it ends fast.
No I don’t think the nukes will be used. Lots of empty threats seen so far in other areas so no.

Haiti should certainly apologize too--all those black Haitians should go back to Africa or at the very least give power back to the original inhabitants.

Um, what? I was referring to French enslavement of people.
