American here. I was thinking it over, and realized I never wore a two-piece until I was 13, and then it was a sporty tank bra top. I may not have gone full bkini until 17. I also was encouraged to never wear black, and thought it was risque when I finally did, as a teenager. My mother was appalled at young girls wearing heels, and I didn't do so until 12-13. Also, pierced ears, etc. It's a conservative culture, about girls' bodies, except when it's not.
I don't have a girl, but I would get her a two piece whenever she asked for it. I think it's more practical for a girl to have a one piece in sporty situations, but if she wants a two piece for playing, I think that's cute. She will grow up to be a female, after all. I have a boy, and he understands it's ok to have his top off. I do not know exactly how I would tell a little girl she can't have her top off other than "you're a girl." I am not ready to fight all that, unless the kid is ready to fight it. For example, kid is trans, they can decide about top on or top off. |
You have a daughter and you aren’t willing to tell her that society has different and unequal rules and expectations for women and girls? |
I would phrase it just like that for a 4yo, yes. No I said I do not have a girl. |
+1 My kid wears a rash guard and bottoms, so technically a two-piece, but I wouldn't be okay with a bikini or crop top at this age. Tankini or rash guards are fine. |
| Whether or not they are "sexy" aside, I prefer the sun coverage of a tankini or rashguard. Sunburns on your tummy are PAINFUL. My kid burns pretty easily, so I take whatever extra coverage I can get. |
No one said they are trying to be sexy, that doesn’t change the fact that they are mimicking sexy behavior. |
No one is talking about putting little girls in thongs, you weirdo. |

Then I take it that you’re wearing burqinis to the pool? |
| A little lesson for you all. The bikini was invented for the male gaze. It is worn for the male gaze. When you have your little girl wearing that you are teaching her that she should dress for the male gaze. The only reason they want it is because they have been culturally conditioned already. Little girls are not laying in the sun working on their tan. They are swimming and playing and should be wearing attire that allows them to do that fully. |
What a subservient remark. You are not teaching a child to dress for the male gaze if she wears a bikini. You are teaching her to dress how SHE wants. What does a child know about the male gaze. I wore bikinis because the other girls liked them. Is your name Duggar? |

I just bought this https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=807789002&cid=45211&pcid=45211&vid=1&nav=meganav%3AGirls%3AShop%20Girls%20Categories%3ASwimsuits&cpos=37&cexp=2223&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D45211&cvar=16849&ctype=Listing&cpid=res22060414527012753545778#pdp-page-content for my 8 year old. If anyone in "our country" looks at her and considers it "sexy"...that's their problem. Gross. |
