FCPS NEW SUPERINTENDENT : Michelle Reid

Anonymous
What’s with the passive-aggressive email they sent everyone about the “confidentiality of all applicants?”
Anonymous
I have worked for FCPS since 2000 (I came from another large district in the DC metro area). I have served under Domenech, Dale, Garza, and now Brabrand. I have also been a STAC rep for most of the years I've been in Fairfax, which means I have had access to these leaders during my tenure with the district.

My question to DCUM--community members, parents, other FCPS employees, even former and current students--why are some supers liked/respected more than others? What made some great and others not? My only concern about any of them was the Battelle For Kids deal w/ Garza--she shoved BTK down our collective throats, and then bolted FCPS to become their CEO. I thought that was shady.

Hell. No. “Mama Bears” need not apply. Although at this point, they may be the only willing candidates.

Would one of the “Mama Bears” focus on academics and facilities rather than the woke nonsense that’s defined the last two years of Brabrand’s tenure?

If so, sign her up!

Literally, the only things "woke" related the last two years that have even remotely affected me are from the right. They are the ones banning books, focusing time/energy/money removing teaching of a concept in the schools that was never taught, and frothing at the mouth like rabid raccoons at SB meetings.

“Mama Bears” are hysterical loons pulling resources AWAY from academics.

We just want to make sure kids are actually in school in person no matter where this pandemic goes in the future and unfortunately we can't trust the current people in charge on that front. It's a really low bar but anyone is better than who we have now.

I too am very unhappy with the current school board, but don't kid yourself that it can't be worse. Have you paid any attention to what is happening in TX or FL lately? It definitely CAN get worse.

In my opinion the majority of students in TX and FL are better off having had in person school for a year more than FCPS.

Thanks for sharing your “opinion” that is not based on any valid data. Hearing from your friends in those states doesn’t count as valid data. Come back when you can compare apples to apples data like SAT scores.

You have no data to support your opinion either- so it's just as valid as mine is. And there is data on how the pandemic school closures harmed kids - so I have more data than you do on my side to boot.

I liked Garza, up until that last bit. I'm not sure why some posters don't like her -- they seem to blame her for the big snowstorms we had (and maybe a wind storm? or one of the bomb cyclones? I forget). Not much beyond those issues, as far as I know. And Brabrand is disliked because of the pandemic, and because of his late-found passion for equity rather than academic excellence.

One good thing Garza did was getting rid of half-day Mondays in elementary school.

I don't know who Michelle Reid is and I almost never read twitter (seems like a solely boomer/gen x platform), but her twitter was one of the top google results. It got me thinking to compare to Brabrand's twitter. While his has been much less active as of late, the differences are stark. Michelle's twitter is full of student achievements, art projects, awards that students have won, school sports news, etc. etc. Every fourth Brabrand post is about equity, inclusion, black history month, etc. etc. Not that those things aren't important in their own right but it shouldn't be the most common themed post. What a knob. Good riddance

I strongly disagree. Those students don’t have much of an education since their states so severely restricted the scope of their education by banning books and teaching of full history. Of course, Youngkin is trying to do the same here in VA.

I am sure Logan didn’t withdraw until it was clear she didn’t get selected.

My guess is that she withdrew when the cat was out of the bag that she was potentially leaving her current district. I would think her county didn't know she was interviewing elsewhere, and now she's lost trust there. Without a guarantee of the FCPS job, she had no choice but to withdraw and recommit to her current employer.

Okay, I just checked out his twitter feed and none of this is remotely true. Please post links to these tweets of which you speak.

DP here. Yes, it was great that TX and FL kept their schools open. But, the point being made about things could be worse re: TX and FL is what they are NOT teaching their kids in school, or what they are wrongly teaching kids about history. Our school board may be terrible re: keeping schools closed, but at least we don't have nutty Christian-faux-history-faux science being taught. We don't have trans kids being systemically ostracized. We HAVE sex ed in school.

It could be a lot worse in some ways.

It’s so awful that the NAACP released the names of the candidates. I feel bad for her having to make amends with her current district just because the NAACP was so inappropriate. If for some reason they felt they needed to make a public statement based on unauthorized information, they should have been general in their concerns and not share the names of the finalists.

OMG—get a life PP. He has 284 tweets. He hasn’t posted since last August. The FCPS Twitter account is robust and tweets all the time.

Who cares what the superintendent tweets?
