S/O family all sharing one room in vacation

Those who share a single room, what do you do after kids are in bed at 9:00pm? Sit silently in a dark room?

My budget is not even close to $1K/night but if I can't afford two rooms for $X each, I will go to a $X/2 place.

We would only do this if we actually did want to fall asleep that early. Like if there are jet lag reasons, or getting up really early for a flight or something, or because we're really tired from skiing.

Or I take a nice quiet bath and DH listens to a podcast. It's not that hard.

How do you take a quiet bath? My kids must be light sleepers. The running of the bath, draining of the bath, flushing of the toilet all from the bathroom that’s roughly 5 feet from the bed would keep them awake and or wake them right up.

I took my daughter to NYC a for a girl’s weekend and even with separate beds, me trying to read on my phone in dark mode was enough to keep her awake. I ended up just laying there for hours trying to fall asleep since I usually don’t go to bed until 11.

We also seem to have the worst luck with traveling. The last trip we took pre Covid we arrived at our destination, got the kids to bed, and our 4 year old promptly started vomiting. He was sharing a room with our then 8 year old. He vomited every couple hours for the entire night. No one got any sleep as we had to continuously call housekeeping to come and bring new sheets. We’d get him cleaned up, the sheets changed, he’d fall asleep for maybe 30 minutes to an hour and then he’d vomit again.

Two other trips he came down with strep throat on like day 2 of each trip.

We booked embassy suites when the kids were little. But now they are 11 and 14. We all go to sleep at the same time and honestly DH and I probably fall asleep first. But embassy suites usually doesn’t cost that much more than 1 hotel room. It’s not the cost of 2 hotel rooms. And everyone still sleeps in the same bedroom part because no one wants the uncomfortable pullout, even the kids.

I’m gonna have to refer you back to the Original post on this one. It is literally what she asked and the entire point of the post.

I wasn't refering to OP, but all of the PP's who seem legit angry that some families share a hotel room? What's it to them? Its totally fine if you don't want to do that - doesn't bother me in the least. Its your money! I'm not sure why our choice should bother some strangers so much? Its weird.

I see equally smug “we enjoy spending time together” from those advocating to share one room implying those who don’t want to sleep with their children in the room or bed somehow love their family less.

+1
The people on the other side are just as strongly voicing their opinions. I didn’t see anyone who seems “legit angry”. Stop being defensive.

The posters calling people cheap, or poor? What is their motivation? Again, why do they care?

When you tell me that your family truly needs 2 rooms to enjoy a vacation, I believe you. Why can't you believe me that my family can quite easily enjoy our vacation in one room?

Again it’s a message board with various viewpoints. I never called out cheap or poor but several people brought up cost (including the OP who said that’s why they were doing one room). It is, in fact, usually cheaper to have one room than two.
It is no more offensive than the poster who responded “what is wrong with your kids?” to the person that said they wanted two rooms. So, equal vitriol coming from both sides. You personally may be respectful of people wanting two rooms, but some people weren’t. And so they got fired back at.

Its classic DCUM rich person judginess. And DCUM must make other parents feel WRONG because its the only way to validate their own parenting choices. Its the same as working/SAH, breast/bottle feeding etc. Everyone just mind their business.

OP said her hotel is $1K per night. It’s funny you are bent out of shape about this - it doesn’t make any sense. Other people have said they’d rather do a cheaper resort and be able to get two rooms. Again, OP is hardly slumming it.

For $1K a night I want a multiple room suite. What kind of hotel is that?

We’ve been getting two adjoining rooms or a suite since our kids were born. What’s the pint of a vacation when you share a room with your kids?

Anonymous wrote:I like resorts with resort amenities. I don't want to cook or clean on my vacation, so AirBnBs are a no. We aren't rich - we budget and save for family vacations including meals out. We prefer 2 rooms or a suite with a door that closes but when that's not affordable at a place we want to be, we all share. Nobody gets the best sleep in those instances but I'm trying to raise my kids to be adaptable and non-snowflakey.

Growing up, my family of 5 never stayed in hotels. Too expensive. Camping or road trips to visit relatives was all there was.

I feel the same and am in an Airbnb right now. Each kid has their own room and we have multiple bathrooms. There is a cleaning service and on call housekeeping through the rental agency. We needed more towels, I called and they delivered. We are going to restaurants, no cooking for me! There’s a pool, hot tub, gym, tennis courts etc it doesn’t have the all inclusive drinks and buffets like some resorts but we are in the US and it’s not that type of vacation. I’m just pointing out that this was less expensive than a hotel and we still have some amenities.

I don't think we've ever shared a hotel room with the kids.

I live in an apartment with a tiny shower stall. I miss baths so much. I'd LOVE access to a tub!

If you actually clean it with a chemical it should be ok.

I can even imagine how some of you live or you have huge homes... not a big deal to us.

You think it’s always cleaned between guests?? As long as there is no hair, if there are a lot of rooms to clean, that bath tub may just get a wipe down.
