APS hurts children again by canceling Extracurriculars until January 14th

Good for them. Either families can behave in a way to get rid of this quickly or this is the consequence for all of us.

Yup. Your kid can’t do newspaper club, but according to the AP&R website, your 55 year old neighbor can roll into the Madison Center on Monday at 1:30 for a folk music sing-along. We’re lucky Gen Z doesn’t rise up and murder us all in our sleep.

Maybe they’re trying to kill off the seniors.

That’s a different event, genius.

Has AP&R closed its fitness centers? Why should those be open if kid activities aren't? The double standard is very frustrating.

Not really. We have different standards for kids and adults in many aspects of life.

The headline makes it sound like someone is grinding cigarettes out on the soccer team. Histrionic. A few weeks off is not the worst thing ever.

Seriously- If this is the worst hurt your child has faced, maybe it is time they build a little fortitude for real setbacks, not just ones on the field/ extra curricular.

Agree x1000. My kid is disappointed, of course, and soooo over COVID (figuratively and literally - she spent most of break in isolation following a positive test), but I’m happy to say that she has some perspective at age 15 that many adults seemingly lack.

It is actually the least-entitled kids who are hurt the most by this decision. There are a lot of kids in this county who rely on APS extracurricular activities to build their resume for college applications and career opportunities. And maybe two weeks doesn't seem like a big deal, but many MS and HS activities are seasonal and 2 weeks is huge for kids preparing for winter competitions-- and not just sports, but also things like robotics and STEM team competitions, Model United Nations, etc. Many of these activities don't carry any more risk than kids being in the classroom. The decision to cancel everything across the board is arbitrary and lazy, and certainly not based on science.

Right, because a two week gap will be heavily scrutinized by college admissions officers and recruiters. After all, the level of improvement an athlete or science-driven kid gets in a 2 week period is huge!

Right on point!

I’m a high school teacher. Most of the kids have been awesome. Very sick of the kids that don’t want to wear masks correctly, though. We’re all uncomfortable… I have to teach in it, but public health guidance from smarter people than I am would suggest that it can help keep us in school. Why are they more important than everybody else? I am pretty disappointed to read that some of the parents on here are saying that they don’t believe in masks and are teaching they’re kids not to use them. It doesn’t matter what you believe in, it’s the policy. You are putting me in a constant battle with your kids. There are other kids in my classroom whose parents have taught them to follow the policy, and would like it enforced. It’s instruction.

PSA- Please do your job at home so that I can do mine.

APS clearly learned nothing from this last election.
