So how exactly is DC going to implement school vaccine mandate next year?

Anonymous
As of now, only 28% of DC kids of age 5-11 are vaccinated. Let’s say that by som pure miracle, another 28% of kids 5-11 get vaccinated. Will the rest 44% be expelled from school and just not get the school education? Or is DC planning to finally open up that online public school they promised a year ago?

They just add it to the list of already required vaccines?

Right, but my question is what happens when they realize half of the kids don’t get this vaccine? (And they won’t mark my words)

They won’t actually expel anyone and they won’t open up virtual school for the optics alone. It would be political suicide and DCPS will not enforce the mandate. Just like they didn’t actually enforce updated vaccinations this year.

PP again but OP you are absolutely right- a large portion of DCPS students will not get the vaccine regardless of a mandate.

I agree but I don’t it will be 50%. I do wonder if they will honestly share the stat.

I’m not concerned because our charter is transparent and shares stats with teachers and families. We are already at high 70% and that’s with having ECE kids not eligible for vaccinations yet. Majority of remaining 23% are the ECE kids.

Teachers and families have a right to know general percentages and should demand so.

I'd imagine kids not in school will cause another spike in crime, and more lost learning. This sounds like a bad, bad idea.

The legislation as written seems open to many exceptions

Bowser will withdraw the mandate right before it goes into effect, just like she did for restaurants.

Let’s be real here. The 28% of kids already vaccinated are concentrated in ward 3 DCPS schools and the charters with majority middle class families. They likely make up most of that number.

I suspect it’s even lower than 28% in EOTP DCPS and title 1 schools.

The city is not going to do anything about kids not vaccinated. They will continue to keep all schools open. The achievement gap has gotten much worst since the pandemic, and the city knows they can’t afford to keep these kids out of school.

Civil Rights lawsuit over the racial disparity if it moves forward. No way it goes into effect.

Ward 6 as well. Our school had almost 40% of eligible kids vaccinated in an on-site clinic the PTO partnered with a local pharmacy to run and spots filled up in under 10 minutes from when the sign up launched. I know at least one other W6 DCPS that did the same.

A lot of people aren’t opposed to vaccinating their kids, they just don’t think it’s important so they don’t bother. They’ll take their kids to the required annual checkups, the doctor will say “…and they need their COVID shot…” and the kids will get at least the first shot.

I have no basis for believing this, but it sounds good, doesn’t it?

I don’t think this is the case for a majority of unvaccinated under the age of 11. I think families are very wary about the new vaccine. I also don’t think DCPS will do anything about it. And quite frankly as a resident I would be up in arms if half the kids were denied in person schooling last year because of this vaccine mandate.
